the hated polo gti - g40 conversion

Featured Replies

Looks like this is going to be a really interesting project. Glad to see you've gone ahead and done what you wanted rather than listening to all those that said it was a waste of time.

If you're going to use a 55mm pulley though I wouldn't even give it 2 weeks before it gives up the ghost but again just my humble opinion, and who am I to say as I've done loads of stupid things in the past

Will defo keep an eye on this one :-D

i'll be running it in for a couple of weeks then at the end of the month it'll be green injectors polished and ported gt inlet and chip to suit and we'll try the pulley.

anyone know how much psi a standard g40 produces? i'm worried than my plastic ended fmic will blow apart as they're only usually good for 16 ish psi before the ends blow off!

Iirc (and according to the bf also) it's about 8 ish, and yes I'd get a fmic with ally end tanks too ;)

I don't think the ECU will take much more than 16PSI? Sure someone can confirm but I think the MAP is only good to about 1.1 BAR if I remember rightly?

55mm would boost pretty quickly but given that the charger is already spinning pretty fast with a 65mm pulley I think 55mm would run the risk of it destroying its self...is 65mm not somewhere near 12-15krpm?

Yeah, it'll handle up to 16psi, after that you need to consider emerald or something similar.

Possible to modify the ECU with a different MAP sensor?

i have one of the psd toothy kits, the charger pulley is under 65mm ~63mm ish i just wondered what was possible with a 55mm pulley, i'm not even sure my engineer can make one up yet - i'm going to see him tonight.

why are people saying it will destroy itself? is it because of the additional rpm or the greater load of increased boost, or a combination? obviously i understand that more boost will put a greater strain on the charger and the additional revs will shorten it's service periods 10k is fine by me.

i don't want to obviously smash the charger to bits and send all the bits through my fresh engine.

i'm only doing it as a trial, if it seems too much i'll take it off and shelve it, might even get a 60mm one made up too.

if it runs 12 - 14 psi that'll be fine by me. just didn't want to get it all up and running then be off the road again due to my fmic, an ally one is on the cards but i'm not made of money. it was 3 weeks yesterday since i drove it as gti and parked it up for the conversion.

hopefully one more week and it'll all be done. i don't think 1 month is a bad time considering what has had to be done from start to finish!!

thanks for all your comments to date it's good to have different views good and bad, unfortunately whatever someone does there will always be some haters. but i've never done things to make everyone else happy, if i like it i'll do it.

mine on a 65mm toothed pulley reaches 1.1 bar @ 7,000 rpm (1 bar being roughly 15 psi) I'm currently making 160 bhp.

to me it seems a waste of time and money fitting such a small pulley knowing it could go bang at any time.

200 bhp should be possible using nothing smaller than a 63

she's alive, stayed with the 63mm pulley at the mo, ran it all up yesterday and took it out for it's maiden voyage yesterday and to put some miles on it, ended up in bournemouth ~90 miles away and by the end of the day had done 300 miles, all seems well, however i haven't got my bumper back from the bodyshop as yet so a couple of zip ties later and we were off, got a few funny looks tho!

try get some more pics later!!

sounds impressive :)

OMFG _ IT LIVES!

FIRST AND ONLY - Mk5 GTI40 Conversion! Wooop

Fair Fookin Play - Come and see me in Coventry - 100 miles each way!

Well done mate ..

Your not one of these dreamers are you ..

You go tht ejob done and you got it done in a quick timescale ..

Even iff i dont think the conversion was worthwile big respect to yourself mate !

Bet your loving the noise ..

Bet you cant wait til lit has run in too !

I've just been thinking and this could end up being quite a special car...

It has been built using some nice tuning products, and after the run in - with a GT Inlet (flowed to match head porting), G60 Green Injectors and a Custom Re-map by Steve (aka PSD) or g-werks - it could see a very healthy BHP on the rollers.

So if anyone knows the highest proven BHP of a 1272 G40 charged motor in the UK - let us know!

I think i read it was something like 192bhp a few years back, no-one ever managed 200+ on a 1272 G40 - although i could be wrong.

I'm going to wager a 196bhp on rollers, all being well!

First Gti40 Conversion AND most powerful 1272 G40 motor would be a nice end result from all the hard work!

we need pics! Once it's run in i reckon you should go all out and really try and make this into the most powerful supercharged G :)

Most powerful 1272 G40 supercharged is doable i reckon, although i think others with 1341 / 1362 builds are getting over 200 ponies with Eaton's, Turbo's and I've heard of G40 charged 1341 / 1362's which are running over 200 too...

I think this is actually a great idea, fact is the 1.6 16v lump is far from reliable...the gearbox's die every 5 minutes..so putting a lighter lump in & getting it to around 170 will mean its much faster and lighter than a standard gti, should be a great track day car...nice and agile!
