Evsi's mk2 coop

Featured Replies

Model - 1989 polo coupe, started life as a parade and i rescued it from a field where it had been for 18 months

Engine - Fully rebuilt 1272 2g block with 11:1 ratio gk pistons. Ported, polished and flowed gk head, reprofiled gk camshaft, modified and smoothed inlet manifold with weber twin choke carb, red top facet fuel pump, modified electronic ignition, 4 branch manifold and full ashley sports exhaust, wolfsburg edition scuttle plaque, carbon fibre scuttle cover, polished (but now going rusty) bonnet lifters, chrome radiator cover, new style header tank and smaller mk1 golf washer bottle. 4 speed gearbox about to be replaced with gt unit. Booked in to the rolling road to be set up, hoping for around 80 bhp even though it feels alot more on the road, god bless power to weight!!

Suspension - 70mm lowering kit on the front, mk1 golf coilovers on the rear. Fully polybushed, front and rear adjustable strut braces.

Brakes - Scirocco front brakes (239mm) with vented discs, standars rears and big foot!! Dot 5 brake fluid.

Wheels & Tyres - Borbet T's - 14 x 7 front and 14 x 8 rears. 195/45x14 tyres, porsche center caps.

Exterior Styling - Full bare shell restoration finished in Lotus azure blue paintwork. Cup mirrors with indicators, smoothed front wings, smoothed bodywork (all plastic trims removed), factory green tint windows, clear front indicators with euro marker lights, jewel rear light clusters, single wiper conversion, de-wipered rear window, euro style plates.

Interior Styling - Coupe S clocks with red surround, coupe S steering wheel, charcoal fiesta turbo recaro's, black headling, carpets and door cards, wolfsburg edition dashboard plaque.

Ice/Security - Alpine head unit, single speaker (ha ha!) can't hear it over the engine to be honest so i'm going to ditch it! Hidden fuel pump switch and wiring and a very bad temper towards vandals and thieves! :x

Comments - Bought one as my first car when i passed my test and have been dub mad ever since. Always knew they had potential and vowed to have a go at building one when i had the money. It's such great fun on the road and if i had a pound for everytime someone said " i like your golf mate" i'd be a rich man!! I originally wanted (and still love) the gk spec motor as it's an absolute screamer and has no problems showing alot of modern 2 litre cars a bit of competion. I do however have plans to g40 turbo it or even look into rear wheel driving it if it's viable. A change of colour is also in the pipeline and thanks to tom (Zombie!!), i'm also looking at a wide arch modification at the same time. Not the best one by far but it did win best in class at Volksfest wales last year and i really can't wait to see some of the other polo's at Polo show in September.

That's a fair comment mate, a couple of people have said the same and that's what it's all about. It will be interesting to see what it makes on the rollers and i've just finished a manifold for r6 carbs, so hopefully i can get them back in time.

love this car, i really like the styling, colour is ace, looks spot on in my eyes

This car is well nice!

Not mad keen on the mirrors though.

Thankyou fella. I agree with you about the mirrors too and i'm thinking of ditching them, but they were the only ones i could find at the time with indicators.

Chuffin crackin m8 what air filter is that?

Thankyou mate. It's a k&n off an old cvh lump i think. Took a bit of modifying but it's ok. Now have manifolds for 40's and r6 carbs so won't be on long :-D

Where did you source the GK pistons from? The mighty German eBay?

I like this alot ..

Personally id change the rear lights and take the eybrow off but all in all it looks imaculate .

I bet it feels rather nippy too

Thanks for the comments Aidan.

Yeah, what do you want to know mate? The one thing i will say, especially in relation to engine parts, is that i was in the right place at the right time for alot of it and i had great help off people from this club. The GK head/cam was a stroke of luck (big thanks to Zombie 86c) and Guddi g40 on this forum sourced the gk pistons for me from Germany. The only thing i would say about this car is that with wide wheels like it's running, i had to do alot of work to the arches to stop the srubbing. In fact, it's not perfect now so i'm going to have an arch conversion done on it and then put 8j's all round 8-)

I think if i were to advise on what to do first, then i'd say a good quality suspension kit and a subframe conversion if you can afford it and a nice exhaust/filter etc. Engine wise, it's a tough one. I never really got any decent power out of the MH (hydraulic tappet) type engine, but the GT lump would be a good way to go. My next job is to build a G40 turbo for mine, but i doubt it will be straight forward to be honest.

As many of the lads and lasses on here will tell you, it really depends on how deep your pockets are

thanks mate i am looknig to buy a suspention kit for it this week i dont know how low to go and what would be the best kit for me some people say drop it 70mm but i dont no if that is a wise idea or not do you have any probs with speed humps and does it limit the wheel size you can have on it...?

thanks aidan

hey dude, i remember karl showing me your car about a year ago and i loved it, the only things i would change about it if it were mine, would be to lose the eyebrow, tint front headlights black , blank off passenger mirror and smooth off indicators that are on the drivers mirror, audi door handles and 10mm lowering top caps.

fair play though <3 it

how did you get on with the r6 carbs, ever get round to jetting some and sticking them on the manifold you made up?

oh and the colour man, i think its the nearest to my perfect colour, very like escort cossie blue probably a shade or two lighter, but this will deffo be in my top three of colours to pick for the mk1 polo when it eventually gets resprayed

70mm is fine. They have such a massive clearance on them in the 1st place, it allows a big drop and sits really nice on 14's especially.

I'm still running 14" winter rims on mine now with 185/50/14 hoops and it looks just right. Ideally, it's good practice to fit some poly bushes to the front end to cope with the drop but it's not essential. If you can get hold of a set of mk1 golf coilovers, you can chuck them on the back for more accuracy too.

Dude, where did you see it?

Yeah there's a few things which aren't to everyone's liking (including mine) but i've just been so happy with it, i've left it be. I wanted to bring the suspension down a little bit more but because of the width of the wheels i couldn't. I'm in talks with my mate now and as soon as he's painted my golf, we're going to tackle a nice wide arch job and then hopefully swap the fronts for 8j's too. The eyebrow and the handles stay though, i love the look of them, but the mirrors could do with going - they're a tad naff!

Funnily enough, i dragged the manifold for the carbs out of my tool box last weekend and i'm definitly going to finish it before May. I really want to go the whole hog with it, but i'm in the middle of doing my golf and money is a bit tight.

I love the conversion in your mk1. I may be picking your brains on that one! 8-)

niiiiiice :D

  • 6 years later...

Does anyone here know how the radiator expantion bottle was mounted in this car, I have had to get the same style bottle when my original pearl drop shape one got brittle and bit started breaking off of it. A friend very kindly fabricated me a fram to mount it in then bolt the frame to the original mounting points but it doesn't give good access to washer bottle and the way this car has been done is much tidier.

Well nice this car!

How did you do your single wiper conversion? I wanna do it on mine but don't wanna pay 75 for kit
