just wondered if when you have your ignition on and turn too side lights does your dip beam come on but duller than usual.

i dont remember mine doing it before but recently installed HID's which have packed up and I've turned them back to standard for meanwhile and when turned to side light the dip comes on but dull.

yeah they do.. some stupid function the pre 1998 polos have, called dim-dip, need to find a way of disabling it on mine.. might just be the headlight switch ?

ah right just never noticed it before, i think its what has fucked up my HID's, because when they turn on they would flicker then die, and turn 2nd turn to dip and they wudnt turn on... to stay on i had to quickly turn to 2nd click otherwise they would turn on...

hmmmmmmm i will get my wiring diagram and see if there is away round it.... has anyone else had HID's and had the same problem?

mk3 polos have a yellow resistor in the scuttle that can be disconnected.

our Corrado simply had a yellow plug that could be disconnected to disable dim-dip (same for mk3 Golfs iirc)

hmmmmmmmm very interesting, could be very helpful... is it again located in the scuttle on the corrado??? I've got the wiring diagram here but dont see any resistors just fuses switches and bulbs...

free bump on this one. I was thinking of running a HID kit 6000k on standard headlights, but if the dim-dip is gonna effect the ballasts then may not be a good idea!

Anyone have any issues with HID's on dim-dip mk4's??

just spoke to a specialost from HIDS4U. yeah it seems that the dim-dip setting will effect the ballast for the HID system and may cause them to malfunction. Especially the digital ones!

Dim-dip must be disabled before installing HID kits!!

the relay for this function is behind the passenger side indicator, its yellow or white, i think it can either be disconnected, or just removed and wired through

noope, haynes manual says:

'this is achieved by a relay, which switches the headlight supply across a dropping resistor located behind the left-hand headlight' and a little picture of a plug behind the left hand indicator

This is exactly the information i need! Been doing my normal "american style running lights" in the front indicators on my 6n - with matched orange sidelight bulbs in the headlights - and remembered about this on the G40 - just unplugged the resistor - job done. Hoped this one would be something similar!

So if you don't remove he dim dip before putting HIDs in it will mess them up?

Remove the passenger side indicator and unplug the yellow connector. Nothing to do with airbag. It is for dim-dip!

now i really wish i had done that before i fitted my hid's as there now screwed haha... oh well will have to puchase another set.
