super unleaded

whats your experiences with super unleaded/octane boosters?

i found that the 97 octanes give about 20 more miles to a tank over 95 and that 99 octane gives me 85 more miles aswell as a noticeable power increase and nice smooth running.

also that the majority of octane boosters are pretty shit.

95 octane: 220 miles per tank

97: 240

99: 305 :-p

what do you use tho?

tesco 99 octane appears to be the dogs bollocks and only 4p more per litre!

shell V power

one in a blue moon, mainly cos of all the additives to give it a good clean out

feels faster but, think thats only psychological

Bullshit. There is no way a slight increase in octane rating gives such a large increase in range. 220 miles to a tank of fuel...euuuchh, what were you doing? Riding the limiter or driving round in circles in a city?

Octane bossterd are sog good you should get one or get some

probily did long runs to get the higher miles, I've noticed slight difference when used them before of like 30miles max... only worth it when I'm doing long journeys tbo...

urm yeah tested em on some rollers before actualy lost power...

Lost power my arse, go and buy Razorboy octane booster... nothing but good shit in that! 8-) i swear by it.

i can get the before and after rolling road print outs if you want mate. most people beleive they get better figures but are not. we did it twice once with a mk4 gti 1.8t lost about 2bhp but gained 1lb or torque then again on a Vtech civic, again lost about 2bhp but same torque... it wasnt until we over filled the gti that we got an increase but probily wouldn't recormend the amount we put in...

It depends.

On a few of my old Polo's, esepcially carb'd ones, the higher octane fuel wasn't very good, the fuel economy reduced and the idle became lumpy.

That was becuase I had my cars' tuned and timed to run on 95 Octane fuel.

Other cars such as my G40 ran poorly on anything other than Super Unleaded.

My MX5 doesn't seem to care, probably because of all the funky electronics. As the MX5 doesn't care I put Shell 95 unleaded in becuase around here it is about 12p cheaper than V-Power. I occasionally use Redex petrol treatment and octane boosters in the summer for long journeys, just in cas ehte fuel economy is better ;)

Higher octane fuels only work on cars that are mapped by the manufacturer to run on it.

I.e. My Lupo Sport (Polo mk5 Sport) is mapped to run on Shell V-Power (98RON). It can also run on BP 97RON, Tesco 99RON or the basic 95RON but with a slight reduction in the engines output.

I highly doubt anything earlier than a mk4 Polo would take advantage of the extra RON as they were mapped by VW to run on 95RON. So as far as I'm concerned your just wasting your money. Even I would be wasting my money for the sake of an extra 2bhp and 10 miles per tank with the price were being credit crunched for petrol. :retard:

hi can anyone help me i am just wondering if anyone knows if super unleaded can harm a 1.6 8v 1995 polo or wont it make any difference since i am having starting trouble with my car it starts up then dies straight off thanks

I've never noticed any difference in range between tesco 99 and normal 95RON fuel. I use both on a regular basis depending on where I am when I need fuel and no matter which I use i still get my usual 340 - 360 miles per tank.

the high octane stuff gives my g40 an extra 20 miles when i put about a tenner in, in fact it seems to be really fuel efficient, can't say it did much for the gt, but then i didnt expect it too. mostly use it for the superior cleaning additives in it once a month or so. I might start using only super on the g40 though seing as it works out about the same cost wise, due to the extra distance it will go on it. (the g40 is stock, so isnt as thirsty as all the modded ones that are about!)

clearly you dnt what your talking about if you think that an increase of four RON numbers is a small increase.

and considering that i do the same journeys evry week i do get that increase in range unless 99 octane makes my tripmeter wildly innaccurate :finger::finger:

run a tank through to give the engine management time to adjust.

advanced timing.

better compression.

cleaner more efficient running. = more power, more range!

although i must say that i was very suprised that i did get that much better range the first time i used t99 octane.

which was why i started this topic, to see if any was experiencing the same.

Better Compression??

Yes, but you only gave us half the facts. If your car was specifically tuned to run on it, i'd expect there to be a difference, perhaps from a performance point of view more than anything else.

In the majority of cases using a higher octane wont give any change in performance or economy, simply because the higher the octane the less susceptible to premature ignition it is. Years ago this was the primary reason for higher octane fuels. 'High' compression engines needed a higher RON (or stars) to prevent knocking whereas low compression engines could take advantage of cheaper lower RON. Nowadays, with most petrol engines having roughly the same compression ratio and advances in design/ technology of both the engine itself and the induction system, it has made the wide range of fuel superfluous.

i could only run my 1.3 golf on 97 ron as it was set up all wrond also i used a lead additive as i thought it was spossed to run on 4 star

my old c50 blew up because i never used 4 star which it was designed for

I'm just saying be carful

yes u silly prick. :finger::finger::finger::ninja:

go jump under a bus u dumb fucking idiot

higher anti knock rating of the fuel allows for further compression than would normally occur (e.g closer to what the car was making as new as the car has 91k on it wont be compression to the same level as before).

what this topic was meant to be about was whether anyone experienced anything intersting in using super unleaded, as i was so suprised with the results of using it on my car ( a car you would expect much of a difference from using it) but obviously none of you do.

So your saying that when you put 99ron in your car the tops of of your pistons magically grow causing the engine to develop higher combustion chamber compression pressures?

normal unleaded in my g40. can hardly afford that never mind all this hyped up shite.

I started using super unleaded a few weeks ago. When I get the chance, it'd be tesco's 99RON, however its usually Shell's overpriced 98RON v-power crap.. Its only a few pennies more anyways (4p) than standard unleaded, and it reduces the occurance of knocking in the engine, so why the hell not. Any other effects that it gives (better mpg as some have vouched by in here) is purely a bonus to me :)

Are you for real?

You think that by running tesco's 99 octane petrol the ecu will just alter the compression ratio of the engine? mate, you can't adjust the cr unless you remove metal from either the head, the block or the piston crown? You can't get better compression by using higher octane fuels, it will always be the same i'm afraid. its just not possible.

Sorry, your talking out of your sphincter.

Having a "higher Anti-Knock rating" which i've never personally heard of, but i'm not disputing exists, won't mean better compression, it will just mean the ecu won't retard the ignition as much. I think, i'm not 100% sure on this, but i think i'm in the correct profession to have some idea what i'm talking about.

lol at this topic, i've never had a full tank, thats student budget for yeh  always runnin on fumes and even then i'm only putting a tenner in it  normal unleaded for me can't afford that exra 4p or whatever it is.

Good, 95ron is what its been designed to run on
