people will argue about owt on this website! i've been through many a phase thinking all this petrol stuff makes your car faster etc etc. and over the years of usage i've concluded? its not worth the bullshit! it says 95 ron on the inside of my g40 filler cap and thats what it gets now...the only thing i don't do is use supermarket fuel..that's it! shell opticack and all the others are pure hype unless your running a car thats highly tuned or set up for the higher octane and even then my mates who quater mile their air cooled beetles etc dont use that they use methanol or ethanol or something like that anyways, i can't remember exactly what it is but you can't get it from your local tesco thats for sure! ..

the sad fact is all this arguement is not worth the bandwidth as petrol bullshit does almost sweet FA on our shitty little polos!

Increasing the ron lets you advance your timing more without engine knocking. But you can't go too far unless you want to customize your dizzy so you don't get too much maximum advance.

Same sort of thing with CR, you will produce more power with higher CR, higher RON fuel and advanced timing.

Lol, I did explain that in the situation to gain more power, you ideally need to up the CR and/or advance the timing... read it. Is the last part rhetorical?

You do it once, the timing doesn't go back to standard after every fill up. It takes about 5 minutes.

i said exactly what he did if the cars tuned to some extend it may be necessary... for an everyday car its pure hype in my opinion...even admitting to falling victim to its pychological boost. next thing the community i once enjoyed being part off beholds people who call others bullshitters? great way of conversing that? lets face it normal cars dont really see any benifit from higher octane fuel. if the car is forced induction or highly tuned it may be worthwhile. its hardly gonna set the world on fire though (unless your really careless with your petrol, but then no-one can afford to be right now!)

The main benifits from the special petrol and non supermarket shite is that it tends to have better detergents in it.

The idea that fuel can change compression ratio is the best joke I've heard in a while, but keep a sense of perspective, lads!

At the end of the day i don't give two shits what sort of fuel i use and my car works perfectly no problems, probably won't even notice the difference if i used super unleaded, i think some people getting their knickers in a twist of this topic for no reason. Damn i put diesel in my polo (which is petrol) and it works like a dream, occasionally use piss every now and again, student budget for yeh, sweet as a nut

lol at this topic, i've never had a full tank, thats student budget for yeh always runnin on fumes and even then i'm only putting a tenner in it normal unleaded for me can't afford that exra 4p or whatever it is.

Same here mate, its was the usual unleaded when I first had the car. (first couple of weeks) However I live in london, and I use my legs to get me around places, rather than the car. Uni's only 10 minutes away, and work is only 20 minutes away.. No need to waste petrol, especially if it costs an arm, a leg and a kidney these days anyway

So yes, its not a daily, thus I can afford the odd 4p extra.. even on this measly student budget o' mine :)

I do on every tank with the Saab. Both it and the Polo perform better (and give better mpg) on super unleaded - but both are calibrated to run on 97/98RON.

Struggle to get 30mpg driving very gently in the Saab on 95RON, but doing the same with Tesco 99RON gets me 32mpg - if you're driving normally the difference is more like 26mpg vs 30mpg. That's on my regular driving from Cambridge to Leamington/Coventry - so comparable results.

"better" compression as it will allow the (now worn with 91K) engine to better utilise the existing compression ratios.

did i say "higher" as in higher than normal? no, i do in fact realise that theres no such thing as t99 octane pixies that come and change my pistons etc at night.
