Weber conversion and spraying bit and bobs

Featured Replies

I've alas liked lakin wit cars, so.....

A couple of days ago I picked up a Weber 34ICH carb off lee_gt (thanks Leeroy!) to upgrade from my pooberg. The pooberg had been living up to its usual name by not idling well and being a little big thirsty, so it was time to go!

Heres a pic of McOld Carb

who needs a garage to work at night

the whole conversion went pretty straight forward. Just had to extend a few pipes/wires. I'm not just playing with the mixture because there are a few flat spots

carb 90% done, I decided to spray some stuff up in t'bay because it was looking pretty RICKER!

Few tins o hammerite, sand paper, wire brushed and my dads electric sander 8-) later, I undercoated everything and then painted it all black with hammerite.

heres a video of the carb running

Ey by gum its lookin reet grand ah tell thee. Ah caan't wait ta see thee.

Good effort tho mate, did you do it on your own? Bet it runs much nicer now? Bay doesn't look half as ricker as it used to either   proper nice and tidy!

I like :)

I have been doing things like portmatching my inlet and cleaning up the block ready for rebuilding. Hopefuly have it running by the time youre back up here!

Nice one mate, that early rocker looks great 8-)

I thought you were having trouble with a DMTR or DMTL webber didn't realise it was for a golf, I should of noticed because I've got a caddy with the same engine bay, It's got a diesel crammed in there compared to your engine.

Anyway good luck with that fuel return I'm not sure how that would fit in, maybe you need a swirl pot?

yeh dude its a 34ICH weber

If a carb has a fuel feed and a fuel return, a swirl pot isn't needed unless you end up with hot start issues.

The fuel will pass through the carb and enter the float chamber if it's open, and will just pass by and return to the tank if closed, so it works out fine.

but there is no return

I see, then you'll definitely need a swirl pot, OR a T-piece, but a swirl pot does the best job by a long shot.

If you can spare the cash, get one from GSF, part number 12141B - Fuel Vapour separator used on Golfs.

Same as below, which I used for ages instead of the standard pot and it was spot on:

wow thats a bit dear! half the price of the carb itself!

the previous owner had a t-piece, but i think i'll take a trip to the scrappies tomorrow and see how i get on

if your not using yours anymore do you want to sell it?

thanks for the advice

I'm selling mine with my DMTR conversion I'm afraid, Sorry bud.

Worth the cash, though. Trust me, I know how you feel - The cost of my carbs is only a fraction of the cost of everything else needed to fit them!

no worries about the swirl pot

luckily though my carb conversion has only, so far, cost me the price of the carb, so i might well splash out

update 1/6/08

getting a bit bored of the ra's at the minute. they are pretty shoddy, so i thought id rock my steals.

they haven't seen any action in over a year so when i go one out from my boot, it wasn't looking to healthy

DSCN1526copy.jpg

i then got busy with wire brushes, sand paper and white spirit until the wheel surface looked rough enough to take some paint

DSCN1527copy.jpg

a quite coat of primer got it looking better already

DSCN1528.jpg

then used a coat of candy white from halfords rattle can

DSCN1529.jpg

and voila...finish isnt great but definately satisfactory enough. just wanted to smarten them up a bit really.

i haven't done the other 3 because i remembered my parents had put them in my neighbours shed whilst i was at uni and he's not back from holiday until next thursday

Man wheres this modding spree come from max? All the time you're here you just drive it around carefully, as soon as you hit rudeboy town the car gets a crazy makeover! GIve me a ring when you're free, or drop me a text and i'll ring you, be good to catch up and talk suspension.

peace out G

looking bob on dude, and as for your mess whilst painting! LMAO! what a mess indeed!

cars looking smart with a few licks of paint mate, what have you done about induction to the carb? i may have a swirl pot knocking about. pop in to a garage and just get them to check the mixture will cost pennies and they will have all the equipment.

those few things youve painted will make loads of difference to the appearance of the car :)

yeh once i get it running 100% right i might get a garage to check the mixture

got myself a mother loving swirl pot for £5 at the scrappy  its a pooberb and was off a mk2 golf cl (1600?)

DSCN1531copy.jpg

.....and then spent £9 on new hoses

That's the ticket - a bit worse for wear but will do the job

yeh it did look pretty shoddy.

so i gave it a once over with the wire brush

I fitted the same carb (Weber ICH) to an early Polo Classic with the same engine as yours a few years back, and had the same problem with a lack of fuel return on the carb. I used a Y piece that fits between the fuel pump and carb, then connects to the return line also. I can get a picture of the install if you like, it only cost me a few quid to buy. Just noticed that you've bought a swirl pot, so you should be okay.

looks better in the after shot with abit of cleaning :p is that steel or is it alloy :? judging by the rust i woudl guess at steel?
