Changing the alternator

Featured Replies

Is it really as easy as it looks to change the alternator on a 6n2? (mk5)

The bolt that swings it for tension.. and the bolts that hold it on..

Gonna change it in the next few days wondering if I should do it.. or if I should get someone to do it for me..

Anything to be wary of?

disconnect plug on alt.

turn tension bolt towards front of car and take belt off.

undo the 2 bolts holding the alt on.

remove alt.

put new alt on.

screw the 2 bolts back on.

turn tension bolt towards front of car and put the belt back on.

connect plug on alt

connect battery.

Just to confirm all..

If the batt is staying at a 11 / 12v charge.. and not 14 when the car is on.. must be the alternator?

I was thinking maybe the wiring?

Dont wanna buy an alternator to find that its not that.. can anyone advise how to make sure its the alternator?

Thanks :)

Hi people once you get the two bots out how the hell do you get the alternator out of the engine?

Someone told me i need to lift the engine and move it back?

Lever bar or large screwdriver between the brack and alt body. You might find it a squeeze to get the thing out. But I wouldn't go moving the engine.

I remember it was simple on my 8v, as there was a bit mote room. But on a 16v it's a little tighter. Yoicoild release the front panel from the top Deere it meets the wings and move it forward slightly. If worst comes to worst then undo the four bolts holding the bracket on and drop the whole thong down

I managed to wiggle mine on my 6n2 GTi up through the bay by turning and twisting. Was a bit of a faff but I wouldn't suggest that you need to be moving the engine etc!
