Hey guys, Just bought a used polo7 GTi from the main dealer, car was registered in sept 2006 and done 8500 miles.

Have these cars had issues with the front tyres cracking? When i went to pick it up i noticed the two front tyres were cracked quite badly in between the thread and the dealers say its not there problem and they have loads of cars on the forecourt with simular tyres on them!!!

I've asked for them to be changed at there cost and they said no! there above 3mm which is the legal limit.

I've found on other forums that the newer range of VW cars built in the past two years seem to eat a pair of front tyres within 10 to 12000 miles, now thats just not right.

I dont think its just VW's. My brother bought a brand new Corsa D SRi when the 57 plate came out last autumn,and its destroyed the front 17" Continentals already.

It's more than likely because they have been stood there for a while in the sun!

Argue your cause and try to get some new tires, legal limit is 1.6mm aswell!

You should have ideally checked the condition of the tyres before buying and said that you'd only buy if it had good tyres fitted. If they are cracked/perished then it'll probably because it hasn't been driven in a while/left in the sun like someone has suggested.

It's not an issue with the car anyway, the tyres aren't made by Volkswagen.

I'd just get some new tires on yourself...3mm whilst way off the legal limit of 1.6mm is about when tyres start to loose their wet weather performance. How are the rears? Might be a good shout just to completely re-tire the car. At 8500 miles I doubt it'd be long before it needed doing anyway.

I got some second-hand wheels and tyres on eBay (for my Mazda) and one of the tyres had a crack lengthways down the tread. Bridgestone (via email after sending a photo) and two different local tyre shops all said to change it ASAP. Repeated heating and cooling of the tyre just from driving could cause the crack to get worse and lead to tread seperation and a blowout. Not such a big deal as we're getting into summer, but also when it's cold water will get into the crack and freeze and expand, making the crack get bigger. But blowouts always = bad times.

It sounds like you've already got the car? but I would check with the tyre manufacturer first and see what they say. If they say the tyres need replacing, print that out and take it back to the dealership.
