Need Help Fitting Superlights to my G40..

Featured Replies

Hello there, bought a G40 a while ago with Eaton charger etc. It wasnt in the best condition but was still very clean for the age! Anyways originally decided to restore it as much as possible and have it as a real mint mint standard sleeper (lets face it noone knows about G40's). Cleaned up the rear myself and fitted original G40 steering wheel, euro plates, removed gash boost gauge and few other bits -

Sent it to a close mate to get her sprayed and the following work carried out:-

Rear VW and PoloG40 badge deleted and smoothed

Indicators deleted and smoothed

Standard wing aerial removed and smoothed

Battery tray welded (rot)

Dings removed etc etc etc (pics to follow)

New wing

Had planned to get the wee 13" BBS Ra's refurbed and polished but then saw a pic of a GT on superlights (4x101.6 ET-7) and ordered some (after researching of course). The rears fit on fine, sit perfectly BUT due to the size of the G40 discs and calipers the front wheel fouls. I'm guessing i will need spacers to fit them, which also means they will foul the arch. What needs to be done? Will the arches need pulled, spacers fitted then same at the back to make it even looking??

Help!! Cheers, pics as promised

woot woot! sticking with white i hope :p as for th erims get some wooden spacers nocked up see what thickness you need its what I've always done in the past obviously dont lower the car down but it will show you how wide you need to go to clear the brakes e.t.c

grind a small ammount 2-3 mm of the edge of the caliper, and fit the smallest spacer you can, this might nean getting a shop to machine down 5mm ones for you, then get some stretch (175/50 or 165/50) on the tyres

if they still foul, then roll the arches!

hth

this may be a thick question but what does hth mean :? and just to say NOYCE WORKSHOP!

hope to help

hth

you downgrade to type one calipers that would fix the problem

i hope you mean carriers!!!

the vw1 carriers can be used with vw11 calipers - same brakes but more room. I'd not advocate type1 vw1 calipers and solid discs!!!

They could stick out rather alot mate...as you can see lol

Definately keeping her white! Love the look of the white especially when shes very clean against the black trim :D she just needed a good tidy up.

Not liking the idea of downgrading the brakes as they are already total rubbish, was initially wanting to upgrade them but that meant putting 14+ rims on which i dont think suit the polo's.

I think to save a lot of hassle and keep my options open in the future i would be better off getting something else like ATS classics.

What are the opinions? Love classics a lot but they seem popular!

Classics will give you the same issues.

I ran 8's all round on my G and used 15mm spacers to clear caliper.....

I'd stick the calipers off a lesser model on, as you say they are naff anyway, you wont notice much...

Theres quite a big difference between VWI and VWII calipers in terms of performance...

Stick with the RA's mate

Yeah ok, i will stick with the RA's, but the rears sit a bit narrow, is there any chance of being able to use spacers on the rear to buff them out a bit.

Had a look on ebay there and the many different types confused me. Bloke last night told me about H&R spacers, would these do, maybe 15/20mm?

Thanks lads, selling these on now

Have you tried using VW1 carriers? These might help.

Can you find out how much that work would cost normally for me mate? its pretty much what I'm planning for mine, and need some idea of how mch I'm gonna be paying.

Sweet car btw.

Cheers lad. I'm getting all the bodywork done for at the most £600 but its a mate rate because its a guy I'm friendly with just starting his own business. Other guys i spoke to were talking way over a grand just for a basic respray not including the welding and smoothing etc... big bill for such a wee car!

Also, where could i get a set of VW1 carriers from to try?

I'm sure youll find some in the for sale section, theres a couple of gt's being broken so should be able to pick some up pretty cheap.

14" RA's + 256mm brakes = goodcombination. Retains same wheel size as the stock rim + tyre combo, lets you put on bigger brakes and keeps the underside of your car away from the road even when lowered 60mm.

Dont downsize your brakes , they the main thing you need LOL slap some banded steels on it LOL

Them wheels are DEEP as fook!! Nice. You ever consider colour coding the centres too? Would look great with the deep polished lip!! Sorry I couldnt help more lol.

I'm more in the mind of selling them and polishing the original RA's to save any hassle!

i agree with tav ... a set of 14" ra's would look the bomb on your car... will look standard and at least you can have the standard brakes/room to upgrade :)

Been trying to find a set locally thought mate and its a nightmare, only ones i can find are 15's and then the 14's i do find are in England and they all want around £100 for shipping which is whopping as i got those superlights sent for £20!

i have used 256 vauxhall brakes and they fit nicly under my p slots so 14's are the way to go
