Mk4 Golf GT TDI

something with a 1.8t engine

Well no because they drink the fuel and are arse raping on road tax lol (post-2001 anyway)

Mk4 Astra, preferably a 1.8 petrol but I wouldn't object to a 1.6 if the condition and price were right. Yeah, it's none VAG, but it's better made than a lot of VW's. It'll hold it's value well, go on forever and a day, and still not drink much. They are also rather nice to drive.

you mean the asta coupes?? my mate has a 1.8 version and as ever with vauxhalls i remain underwhelmed with it, so far not that reliable and a pretty slow, not great on fueleither, is a posh interior though and looks quite nice, id personally go for something diesel power like tobyk said mk4 gold tdi.

The Golf's a nice drive, but is it reliable?

People think diesels are cheaper to run, but derv prices are going to stay higher than petrol. Then when (not if) your fuel pump dies, be prepared to spend a large sum of cash for a new one.

I used a 1.8 Vectra for work as a stopgap earlier this year (it was cheap, well, technically it earnt me money when I sold it). It wasn't fast, but it was certainly quick enough (130hp?). I was getting high 30s mpg as a minimum.

vauxhalls dont hold there money at all

Without any hesitation i would spend all of tht 4k on a Seat Leon 1.9Tdi 110, look ace and i used to drive me mums 110 so know that they drive well too, altho for 4k it would b a high mileage one, but who cares when its a VAG diesel...bulletproof

No way would i spend four grand on a modern car, made from junk over-recycled materials, that's gonna be worth nothing in two years. I'm happy with my tidy 4-seater but if i had to get a safe family car id buy an immaculate, low mile early '89-'93 Merc 190 1.8. Given that they weigh less than a 3dr BMW Mini Cooper, were the best-built small saloon of their time, and wont depreciate, its a no-brainer.

3 quarters of a civic type r!!!!!!!! 8-)8-):lol::-p:-o :-D :-D :-) :-D :-D 8-):lol:

a scooby doo (proper one!)

for 4k!!!

ibiza cupra mk3, standard they are fairly economic if you dont rag the pants off them, plus get a pre2001 version & tax will be cheap

...tax will be cheap

 u mean "less expensive" ...paying tax to drive on a road is stupid. are we like the only country that has road tax?

Don't think there is much choice in the way of 4k new cars

actually a 6n2 gti would fit the bill pretty well, might get one of those myself next year

Audi A3 2.0TDI or one of the N/A petrol versions.

Mk5 Fiesta Zetec-S. Cheap on tax (Ph2), reliable, great overall build quality, handles very very well also a well built, nippy little 1.6SE engine.

We had the Astra hatch of that generation. 2.2 SRi, 145bhp but nice amount of torque. Felt really good on the road. Would do high 30's mpg if you drove sensibly, not sure how much they are worth now?

for 4k!!!

It's just never going to happen, could get a ropey Integra maybe.

You'd get a half decent UK spec teg for that no bother

My next recommendation for £4k is an Evo 4 lol
