its amazing all the cheap cars you can get on a jap autcion, fair enough its an online auction so all you can go on is the writting description and loads of pictures, so you dont quite know what your actually getting until its here, but you save alot. some cases it will be more expensive, but in others it might not be, just got to do your homework and know what to watch out for. (same goes with any auction really)

ye but when were talking a car for 4k the cost of bringing it over is gna be a real big chunk of what its worth. and the re-map aswell.

why not be different and buy a horse?

Get a pacer horse then a solky cart like my dad they go like shit off a shovel ha ha lol.

maybe import one from japan or summat lol.:thumbsup:

Why not go all out and get something different?

I'm thinking of risking it and getting an Alfa GTV similar to this:

Ebay link

Good points:

  • 3.0 V6 sound
  • 0-60 sub 6.5secs
  • It's an Alfa
  • Looks nice inside and out
  • Initial purchase cost cheap
  • Fuel consumption is ok considering
  • Pre 2001 models don't get hammered on tax
Bad points
  • Ins group 19
  • It's an Alfa
  • It could self destruct
  • Maintenance costs
Personally the good outweighs the bad. I'd much rather have something abit special (as the G40 was) rather than just be another TDI driver. All imo of course.

An alfa? off ebay!? :?:paranoid:

Polo GTi with full leather trim.

your find a mint one for less that 4k. You wont get any other car for that money that even compares.

- heated Full leather

-xenon headlights

-climate control

-6disc changer etc

-fast

-reliable

-great handling

Lol id love someone else to out a car up that even comes close to this.

type r for 4k :D no chance

'89 merc lol mmm rusty baby :D

:o and alfa and :o off ebay. get any worse?

Dont mean to sound rude but comeon guys, what the hell!?

So long as you take a look around it before you bid I don't see the problem. Same risk as buying any used car at the end of the day!

Buy a rallye!

I did - freakin awesome!

Dude a £500 Jag XJ6 is faster and better handling than a Polo GTI

As is a £1000 Supra turbo

£4k is fucking evo/scooby money man!

£500 would buy a Mk2 Golf 16v which would also rip a Polo GTI a new arsehole

I think you are a bit stuck up over your car.

Edit: reliable!? Hows your gearbox?

Edited by tobyk

How about a nice little Caterham style kit car (Obviously not a Caterham cos that would cost you a LOT more than 4k) with an R1 lump in the front!!!!

Faster than nearly anything on the road, cheapish tax, dirt cheap insurance!

No brainer in my eyes!

a seven style kit car with an r1 lump for 4k??????!!!!!!!!

examples pls.

Er... Seat mk3 ibiza Cupra

Much much much more reliable (no heavy common issues aka gearboxes), far superior engine for tuning & even standard...quicker in a different league especially after a bit of playing...all the extras a gti has bar the xenons (upsetting but you can live with that when you are keeping up with evos rather than chasing suzuki swifts), better handling...although that doesnt say much, good brakes..& just as rare if not more than the gti...plus you could buy a newer & lower mileage model for less....

thats why i swapped my gti (which i loved to bits) for a cupra last october & haven't looked back. Made me realise how overpriced the mk5 gti was & how undervalued the cupra is....i'd 'understand if VW lived up to its expectations of 'reliability'..but the mk5 gti certainly doesnt do that.....dont get me wrong though i love the gti to absolute bits & think its definately one of the best looking small hot hatches ever but it certainly isnt the best value for money...

Other good choices imo are

- Pulsar GTR

- Old evo as said

- 106 Gti

- 306 gti-6

- ITR
