Assuming mk1-3

Tightening seq:

10 - 4 - 2 - 6 - 8

-7 - 5 - 1 - 3 - 9

Tighten in that order in 3 stages (ie all to stage 1, then all to stage 2, then all to stage 3)

Stage 1: 40Nm / 30lbft

Stage 2: 60Nm / 44lbft

Stage 3: A further 180 degrees (or two stages of 90 degrees)

Bolts are stretch type, so should not be reused (some books say you can reuse them once, but I wouldn't).

Cast-iron Cylinder Block (all engine codes except AER,ALL)

Stage 1: 40Nm / 30 lbf ft

Stage 2: 60Nm / 44 lbf ft

Stage 3: Angle Tighten 90 degrees

Stage 4: Angle Tighten a further 90 degrees

For GTi 125bhp iron block 1.6 16v,and 75bhp alloy block 1.4 16v,the figures are..

Stage 1: 30nm.

Stage 2: Turn a further 90 degrees.

Stage 3: Turn a further 90 degrees.

would a 1992 1.3 polo coupe cl have a aluminium or cast iron block??? need to know and ent to sure.

or just do what my mate does and use an air snap-on gun hes an idiot but it WORKS!!! i think il be taking mikeyMKs advice

I have read before that its advisable to give the bolts another tighten once the engine has been run up to temp, Is there any truth in this?

some headgasket kits come with a leaflet that state you do your final 90 percent turn (stage 4) after running the engine up to temp

My head gasket came with nothing, I had to get the order and torque settings from this thread. Do you think it would be worth doing or could this just be over kill? Has any one bothered doing this when refitting an AFH head?

Could you kindly confirm if the torque settings above provided for a MK4 engine is the same as required for a 2005 Polo 1.4 Trendline?

I do know it is suppose to be a BLM engine. would sincerely appreciate the help. I need my car.

2005 Vw Polo 1.4 - BLM engine, (82hp)

New bolts - Yes

Stage 1 - 30nm

Stage 2 - 90 degrees

Stage 3 - 90 degrees

Same tightening sequence as shown above by Polio
