my new project golf GTD.

Featured Replies

i've not really posted up any thing of my cars for a bit as theres nothing worth showing thats been going on, but now i've taken on a bit of a project so thought it might be worth posting up a bit of a build thread so here goes.

so the fuel consumption of my 16v has been kicking the shit out of me, i love the golf and the sound of the a KR on full chant is addictive but running costs are just too muck for me so i decided to build the perfect car for me (this can only end in disappointment  ).

i need some thing thats quick enough to stop me from getting bored, handles well and good on fuel plus i need to be able to put it on the floor. after doing some hunting i found some one selling a cheap mk2 GTD i could use as a doner car, so i got in touch with a mate i sold a mk2 16v to a while back (he only wanted the engine and running gear) and came to a deal on the shell. surely you can tell where this is going, so lets get some pics on the go.

i got the GTD last night, started stripping it today...

should finish stripping the gtd tomorrow and have the shell of the 16v at mine by next weekend so i can start moving on. plans mainly consist of 13x8's and sump guard and some coilovers.

thanks

i had a little go in the gdt before i started on it and tbh it was surprisingly quick compared to how i thought it would be, not lightening but should still be fun. gonna have a straight though exhurst to a twin DTM back box as well so should sound like a tractor

thanks

Yeah, a few hours tinkering should see 110ish BHP, and that's without changing any parts!

This forum may help http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/index.php?c=2 :)

polo1.8tgti07... thats the plan for now mate, get it mot'ed then wind it up.

chrispy... not sure whether to stick with big bumpers or not, just gonna have a play once i get the rims and coilovers and see what suits it best, also got the choice of 4 light grill or single badgless, in fact theres quite a few options i have on different parts i have lying around, and the colour is atlas grey and is original.

K.I.T.T... already on that site, found some good stuff on there, well worth a look for any one else that has a vw diesel and wants to tune it

been busy again today, finished stripping the doner car and fitted the rear axle to the grey shell.all that left to do now is drop the 16v engine and front sub frame and move the grey shell to mine so i can start putting it all back together.

heres a few pics of todays graft...

not bad for about 10 hours work really, the only help i had was with lifting the shell over the engine and rolling it on its side, should have it mostly finished by the end of next weekend. then i'll be having a play around with bumpers and stuff to see which ones i prefer and get it mot'ed. must admit its been a lot of fun, can't wait till next weekend now 8-)

and heres a few pics i took of the daily dogger...

yeah once i get the coilovers and the 13's the small bumpers will be going on, but i can't get them till this is on the road and i can sell the 16v, just gonna have a play around and see which look better with -40 and standard steels.

i've had a little play with a few things today...

sprayed the spare bonnet and fuel flap matt black.

2007_0624pics0002.jpg

2007_0624pics0003.jpg

gonna do the spare bottom bit that the front splitter bolts to but i run out of paint, that way i can have a little mess about fitting different bits and can swap back if i don't like it.

had a go at tinting one of the headlights as well, made a little cock up on it by using electrical tape instead of masking tape (thought i could get away with it but failed  ) and it took some of the silver off, reckon it should look fairly good when i do the final set but this is just a tester, gonna put it on my v16 for a bit and see how it is. not the best pic but you kinda get the idea...

2007_0624pics0001.jpg

might start cleaning the engine up and paint a few bits tomorrow if i get time.

thanks for looking 8-)

good progress mate!

problem is with them being round theres very few options of were to paint to make them darker, so far i've done the metal bulb shield thing, the small lip and the side part of the glass, still trying to think of more options

surely your gonna be driving round, getting hassled by people wanting to race and wanting to explain to them that its not a gti but a really old oil chugger under the bonnet, and that you have a real gti at home your just too stingy to pay for fuel lol

GTD's aren't slow if you do the right mods.

I'm slowly coming round to the world of diesels... The GTDs are odd in that there are some tuned examples still pulling strongly at 5k... I mean what the fuck, it's a diesel, how?

look what we found in the 25+ year old dirt of a mk1 polo

i paid £200 for the GTD, tbh from the quick look round it and the little drive i had in it i don't think it would of failed an mot on much, drove well and every thing worked (breaks needed a good bedding in tho, but it had been stood for ages), didn't find any nasty rust while stripping it either. the lad i got it off was planning on putting it in a caddy but he was moving down south so had to get rid quick.

gotta big up my man swiller giving me a heads up on it
