Yeah that was me. Decided to go down the GT route 'cos I really can't be arsed with the constant problems I hear about G40's, not to mention it would have been £750 instead of £250 for the conversion. Few bits of fabricating required at the front, the piece that goes below the grill is mullered, so may make a new one to cover it with, and I removed the bumper last night, to find that it was mostly comprisd of rust. Thankfully have a shiny new one to play with.

Watch this space... (but not too quickly!)

haha any progress, is still progress 8-) good to see it started tho mate

I agree, that's the route i'm thinking of taking with my mk2 next year, that's if she last that long, to say shes rusty would be a bit of an understatement :paranoid:

I want your k&n filter, been looking for one of those for ages, where did you get yours from?

It came with the car, so I don't know I'm afraid!

As for rust, given the whole car a good once-over, and I'm pleased to say it's as clean as a whistle, discounting the odd scratch here and there on the body.

The K&N received a slight ding on the top. I'll take a piccy of it tomorrow if you want to take it off my hands.

Think of a price, and we can barter from there.

Update.

Engine dropped in last night.

Drive shafts + gear linkage connected, now for the plumbing and wiring. (Headscratch time!)

Nice progress mate. Don't worry about the wiring. Its not as hard as you first think. My car goes in the garage tomorrow for a full check over and make sure that there is nothing nasty going on. After that i should be able to drive up and have a look at the goings on.

:-)

You run the fuel lines yet?

Youve been giving it a bit of bastard !

Dont hang about do we ?

Bet you cant wait till its all in and you can take it for a drive .

Hope the little niggly bits come together ..

No not yet. I haven't been to get any so far, they can be done at a later date.

The car is completely devoid of wiring at the mo, so a fresh (+ clean) bay to start from.

Not been going too fast, Saturday + Sunday night last weekend, 3 evenings last week + all saturday and 3 hours last night.

Sort of need to get it finished and out of the Father-In-Law's workshop, although I reckon he's not in as much of a hurry to get me out as he says!

And no. I can't wait to get it on the road, in an ideal world would like it ready for NWVAG next tuesday at Preston (sort of debut if you like!).

If not then I will just have to bide my time.

Looking forward to seeing yours in the metal also!

Slightly off topic, but what the hell, it's my thread.

Started re-furbing my TT alloys for the 'Rado, thought I'd make them look better as they wouldn't sell as they were.

VW Pastel White, for those who wish to know.

Hopefully i will be seeing you there .. My car will be filthy after the epic drive to preston though :-(

Couple of questions though.

1. Where should I take the power for the fuel pumps from, it's the red+yellow one, and as I've kept the original rear loom and spliced the earth leads from that, it's just there isn't any red+yellow ones on it.

2. When the key is half-turned ( for electrics only), the indicator light in the dash stays on, and lights won't turn on, is this normally due to a lack of a good earth?

3. What is the recommended engine + gearbox oil, and how much to use?

4. Would you use V-Power, it's all I use for the 'Rado (or is that because I'm a petrol-head?), or will 98RON be fine?

5. My throttle cable seems far too long, do I need to modify this somehow?

Barney, if you're around, it would be great if you could make it up this week on an evening, so I can get finished, and thanks to you and everyone for the assistance so far and to follow.

1. Have you got the fuel pump wiring from the GT?? (in fact i think any mk3 will do) See max crox thread for the wiring you will need. If you do not have this you will need it. Just needs splicing into the mk2 loom but it is very simple to do once you know what goes where. Will need the correct wiring though.

2. No idea on this. I am having lighting trouble of my own right now.

3. Fuchs stuff from GSF is what i use and i think many others do to. Engine oil 10w40 semi synth, Gear oil i used is also fuchs and comes in a 4litre bottle and is the correct grade (see GSF website).

4. You can use V power and some people say has good results, i can barely tell the difference but my car needs setting up properly :-). Also if using an upgraded ecu chip have been told to use V power or the equivelant from other petrol stations.

5. Shouldn't need to modify the throttle cable at all just adjust it by moving the rubber ring thing up ad down and testing you get the correct pedal travel for full throttle. Make sure butterfly is fully open when foot to floor. Hard to do on your todd.

I will come round if i have some free time matey :-) Will keep you informed.

Have you run the fuel lines yet?? Do you have the correct fuel pump wiring??

  • Author

I have the full fuel wiring loom, and run it all to the correct place, just needs connecting! Will I be able to link both power feeds from the lift pump and hi-pressure pump to the same power source?

Chip may be upgraded, unsure as yet, but will use V-Power nonetheless.

I'll have another look at the throttle cable, see what I can do!

Running the fuel lines tonight (joy).

Get some oil in it, and see what happens.

Cheers again for the help.

1 - As Barney has said have a look here for fuel pump wiring My build thead

2- I think this will be the 3 sockets on the back of the fuse box behind the glove box. It is normally a loose connection. get your hand up there and give it a wiggle. :)

3- Engine Oil is normally a 'personal' choice but I use Mobile Super S 10-40 and I think its around 4 litres you need (Check Haynes). There is an FAQ on the gearbox How to fill & What to fill it with

4- You don't have to no. It will run perfectly well on regular unleaded. But if you have the money it does make it more perkier.

5 - I used the Std Mk2 cable. I didn't have to adjust it or anything just clip it back in.

Mark

No worries.

For a general look at the wiring see max crox thread. Thats all i used for it. Fairly easy to follow when you look at it all. Remove all the seats and the lower glove box and lay all the wiring out as it should go and work it all out in your mind. Then get on with any cutting and soldering that may need doing.
