Mk2 'loon GT Conversion in progress...

Featured Replies

I have the full fuel wiring loom, and run it all to the correct place, just needs connecting! Will I be able to link both power feeds from the lift pump and hi-pressure pump to the same power source?

Yep :)

Which source should i be using? There are no red/yellow wires on the rear loom.

the red and yellow wires are part of the Interior/Rear GT loom. You might not have these. The power is taken from the sockets at the back of the fuse box (as per my build thread) but I suppose you could take the power where ever there is switched live (or perm live and just put a toggle switch in on it - if you take a feed straight from the battery make sure you fuse it!)

Cheers!

I haven't been on here for a week or two, so i've just noticed you're problems.

I did this conversion on my 1990 mk2 saloon a couple of years ago now.

I can't remember the ins and outs of it all now but i could come over to yours and compare things with mine, if you want, i'm just over the other side of the fell, in Penrith.

I seem to remember a problem with the throttle cable and if i remember right, i shortened the metal rod at the pedal end of the mk3 cable.

Let me know if you want me to pop over and i'll see if i can get sometime.

That would be absolutely superb if you can, let me know when you're available!

Friday night any good?

Good for me. What time you looking at, cos I will give you directions to somewhere near, then you can follow me to the workshop. (It's in the middle of nowhere!)

Well, thanks to mk1 lx last night, the wiring is all but done, the fuel lines have been run, just needs a small amount of finishing off before I try to fire it up for the 1st time, which hopefully will be some point this afternoon.

Running problems questions to follow no doubt...!

What coolant should I be going for, btw?

Well tried to fire it up today, and much sadness ensued when it wouldn't.

More questions I'm afraid, firstly a description...

Wiring in all in as far as I can see, checked it over last night and there doesn't seem to be anything missing except this spade connector on the dizzy housing (pic 1). Where should the cable for this come from, what does it do and would it affect the running?

CIMG0013-2.jpg

There is a spark at the plugs, but on a hunch I took off the dizzy cap and this is what I saw. The inner dizzy housing has had some kind of impact (don't know how, resulting in this mess. The rotor arm looks like it's had a hit also.

There is fuel coming from the pump, but (sorry for being stupid) which ends are the feed and return respectively?, though there is the smell of fuel when I take a spark plug out.

Any help on this would maybe stop me crying!

Engine is now running!

Just got to connect the final water housing and radiator, adjust the throttle and clutch, and I can get the interior back in. Then modify the exhaust to suit, it's too long at the mo.

Massive thankyou to everyone that's helped, both on here and in person, you've all been a great help, provijng what a good community this is.

Will get a video up soon of it running!

THANKS AGAIN!

Don't know yet, not been out of the workshop!

Going to check the gearbox oil levels, sort the clutch out then take it out (after I've put the bonnet back on!)

Always handled very well due to the lowerage!

Another update!

Had it driving out the workshop in my father-in-law's little airfield (yes, I know).

It is grass, and a bit wet, but she's spinning up like a right little beauty!   :lol:

Somehow, not having done it ever before, I'm getting all the gears really easily, even reverse, must be beginners luck methinks.

Stevie, I'm a newbie at changing engines, and only working with limited knowledge of automotive mechanics, but a good amount of common sense (and a bucket load of luck, perhaps!), but I'll give anything a go once, although if I commit myself to travelling to Derby to help, I don't think the missus would be massively overjoyed, or the kids for that matter!

Looking forward to getting the exhaust fitted + mounted on wednesday, and for all the cleaning shite + condensation on the block to burn off, it doesn't look particularly great when steam's billowing from all quarters.

On another note, got my 30th birthday present on saturday, driving an Aston Martin DB9, Ferrrari 430 spider, Subaru WRX rally car, and a Group N polo (whoop whoop) near stafford for 7 hours. I wonder if they'll let me have a good crack at powersliding?

If Clarkson can do it, why not anyone else!

That be a yes. Its broken today though. :(

I wish i got a birthday present like that  Would absolutly love to drive them all! And powersliding is harder than it looks, i used to go drifting and it's bloody difficult. Hopefully be back doing it again soon, have to re-learn it all as it has been ages
