I noticed this after reversing off a driveway without a lowered kerb yet. The passenger side is at least a 10mm bigger gap than the driver's side.

I visually inspected it, but I'm ot entirely sure what to look for? I've noticed that the drivers side has a piece of plastic infront of the wishbone (as you look from the front of the car) but the passenger side doesn't - should it also have a piece?

What should I be looking for? what would cause the increase in the space between the tyre and wheel arch?

Possibly a bent bottom arm or wishbone. Use a piece of string to measure the distance one side from centre of front wheel to centre of back wheel, then do the same again the other side. If the distance is different on both sides, get it checked out by a garage, if its the same both sides, could be a misaligned bumper or something similar.
