although 60bhp is low for a 1.4 it has decent torque as pointed out so doesnt feel to slow. remember there is a jump from 1.0 to 1.4 on the polo's where most companys have a 1.2 which will have the same bhp but less torque and will not be as reliable or fun as the mk4s are great wee cars.

all my mates used to have 1.2's when i had my 1.4 and i used to be quicker and my mates 1.2 clio had 75bhp so 0-60 he was faster but mid range i could out accelerate him. have a couple of years with the 8v then get a 16v when your ins is lower, mine halfed in price at 21.

yeah the mk5 Polo GTi is sweet, nearly bought one a couple of years ago but the guy just wanted too much 4 it and it was 5 door so i didnt want to pay 2 much as i love my 3 doors

1.6's are certainly not slow, the torque for a small car like that is pretty impressive. make it breath better and put some wicked tyres on it and you are laughing. the ride comfort is very pleasing to.

VW engines normally have somewhat better torque than other 1.4's and 1.2's, but lower horsepower.

You could have a car with 50HP and 50ft.lbs of torque, and another might have 65HP and 40ft.lbs of torque. The difference between the two may be that the first car is tuned more for low-rev driving which is the sort we do all the time in streets and roads, only ever really nudging high revs occasionally - if the second car happens to have an engine tuned more towards that, then flat-out power will be better.

Torque gets you up hills at 2000RPM, Horsepower helps you get to high speeds.
