id say new vws are not the way to go, id be steering towards something jap for reliability, or if its the need for space something like a mk1 focus derv, we had a 2 litre zetec, shitloads of room in it, pretty fast and handled on par with my mini round our twisties in northamptonshire, could get it cocking a leg round a corner.

not sure what it would be like to insure but diesels and turbo diesels are usually pennies compared to petrol equivs

i 2nd that call for the Focus, that was my last car n it was a 1.8 16v Petrol, was same speeds as a 6n 16v but is more powerful at higher speeds, handles like u wudnt believe and you get a good specced 1 cheap nowadays.

if you do get one watch out for clutch(the diesel has a Dual Mass Flywheel that costs a bomb to replace and the petrol is notorious for the clutch going), the idle control valve and rust around rear arches and sills.

get one with leather, the 2.0 zetec esp is a good model but if you want a smaller engine try the 1.6 black or 1.6 silver both ltd edn with leather and loads of extras.

this is my old one. it was a 1.8 16v millenium edition with 66000 miles, FSH, new tyres, clutch and sold for £2550 so theres an idea of what to pay, plus there are loads out there and people are despearte to sell due to mthe competition so use that to your advantage! it was ins gp 7
