Had a bit of a rant. . . what do yers think?

Righty ho, Bit of a rant here. .

I started in the whole "Dub" scene around 5 years ago, with a mildly tuned / standard looking mk3 golf VR6, After a bit of research and forum scouring i found what i was after i terms of tuning and styling, This found me using Awesome GTI (as it was back then in the little premises) as not only are they Local to me but genuinely seemed top blokes with a real passion for what to do and NOT to do to my car for what i needed, this ended up with me spending a small fortune on tuning and styling and i couldn't have been happier.

Moving onto my next car a B5 passat 20VT i then found custom code (independent franchisee used not the main dealer) and venom to be more than helpful., again all along the same lines tuning styling wise

I now currently drive a mk3 polo saloon 1.3spi, now i understand a oddball car like this aint gonna set the world on fire in any guise BUT I'm getting stupidly annoyed with a number of firms not taking an interest in anything other than the 20V turbo engine or mega bucks tuning

I currently have a Skoda AEE engine and a set of R6 bike carbs ready to go into my saloon, BUT no one is interested,

Awesome, not only didn't want to know but couldn't even point me the direction of someone who gives a toss about the cars that it built it success on (in my opinion it seems to have changed priorities when they started dealing with Jap crap and other marques)

Dub sport, (the ultimate engine conversion kings ever?), Well since Ian birch has left them the place is a shambles, shoddy work, countless forum threads about bad service and a complete lack of ability to even pick up a phone or have a working website

JBS auto design, I nipped into JBS this week asking if i brought the AEE and bike carbs down how much/ how long it would be to get a relatively simple engine swap, albeit with a not to hard to build custom inlet manifold to be fabricated, and mid conversation i was interrupted by one of the "phone monkeys" that "Not something we would be interested in mate, unless its a 1.8 20vT or a 2.0fsi, were not interested!"

What is happening to our beloved VW specialists?, not everyone out there has the current scene car of the funds to warrant another 20vT conversion, Some of us surprisingly DONT DRIVE GOLFS! I have the money and want the conversion doing, i have searched through most of the localish tuners in my area to get this done but not one company is willing to help

Unfortunately it looks like i man have to start looking further south to get this done, not a problem if the work is carried out but its another inconveinance to travel down to somewhere, drop of a car, get back home then to repeat the process again to get the car back.

Hopefully some of the folks at these firm will read this and realise that not everyone is a cheque book hero and that other engine work is still wanted!

That’s pretty shitty mate, blame the rise of chequebook cars for that I guess. Try http://www.boggbros.co.uk/ they’re probably the most experienced guys for carb conversions you’ll find, might be far away for you mind

The whole 20VT thing I think is becoming a victim of it's own success.

I do understand why people choose to use the lumps as they are very tunable, but I personally feel that these engine conversions are now too common. From a "scene" point of view this trend will become passed by something else in time, but I suppose looking from a garage point of view, the parts are easily obtained and because so many are being done of late they can turn these "jobs" around quickly to make maximum profits.

In a time when we may experience some economic slow down, I suppose the owners of such garages may have to thinking about making hay while the sun shines at the moment.

I must say I was tempted by a 20VT in one of my vehicles at one point, I fet idle and didn't want to do it myself so I phoned for prices. Most of the places I phoned were booked up for many months in advance. Levels of advice & knowledge varied, from excellant to dam right awful. So don't feel alone when your phoning around.

All the best in your project!! :-)

This is an almost identical conversion to what i was looking into doing myself hopefuly over the christmas months .

From what i am aware the conversion is pretty simple it would just be the car'bs that would cause you a trouble .

I hope you manage to source a garage to do the work for you . Would be intrested in how the conversion goes aswell once you have found somewere able to do the work for you .

Keep us posted mate

Will do bud, hopefully with a wee build thread to go with it, i might have to look at a motorsport specialist round our way, could be pricey BUT it will be done proper and the bloke said if i wanted to "muck in" i could, hopefully that doesnt mean make him cuppas all day tho!

Mate, i see where youre coming from but they have to make money at the end of the day. Why would they book you in to do a conversion for loose change when they could book someone else in and have the space to gain £5k+

Unless of course youre willing to pay a massive premium to warrent them losing space/time/staff etc then a "small" conversion isnt what big companies like dubsport/JBS/awesome gti are in the market for

Isnt there any small garages around you? or any forum members with the knowledge that you could pay?

Have you not thought of doing it yourself? as said, bogg bros could/will do the carb conversion for you after youve got the actual engine in 8-)

If i were you, i`d get a post up in the engine section seeking help, offer to pay people, I'm sure it will all come good  good luck

I understand that they are in it for the money at the end of the day, BUT, How many people in the current "credit crunch" are walking in asking for the "jbs on the shelf massive turbo conversion £5k)?

Its also the attitude form them, if they dont want to do it they shouldnt then fuck me of an thats it, because at the end of the day this is the kind of response it will prevoke, if they cant do it pehaps reccomend a firm/person that can do it, I'm not exactly asking them to give buisness away, but that exactly what they are doing, why not help a brother out rather than sneering down his goattee bearded face that hes not interested (jbs BTW)

I'm gonnahave the crack with this local guy and see what figures he comes up with but it may end up dragging some lads in fron manchester to help me get this thing rolling

Thats preety poor really, i don't get why i company doesn't want to take your money? Shocking tho realy, i wonder if they care about VR6's anymore - looking at most forums the VR6 couldnt hold a light to a 20vT, its the young people that can't appreciate noise, its all about big (Easy) bhp - Thats why your conversion that is what 110bhp - 120bhp?? Its hardly something they can show off in a magazine article.

Well Well Spudds! Long time no see, hope you have being busy with the loon!

i know a guy who has put a polo 16v engine in a mk1 on bike carbs spudds and hes very local to me which is basically cheshire way near you i think? i could speak to him or pass your details on to him and see if he can offer you any advice on the amtter if you like? pm me or let me know if you want, you have my number.

is this a guy called riley by anychance lives near us and has a green mk1 golf??

cant be arsed to read through this mate, but midlands vw in cannock staffordshire are good.

they have a lot of respectable looking cars in to do work on.

I know exactly how you feel - i did exactly the same conversion two years ago,and was outcast. 1.6 AEE Felicia engine with bike carbs into a MK2,and contrary to anyone wanting to help, all i got was laughed at (mostly by Golf and G40 owners) apart from a tiny minority. One who was happy to help, was Gaz on here. Not that he knew how,but the attitude was refreshing. In the end,i did the lot myself.

From experience, your best bet is to think around the whole 'Scene' thing and find a localish garage that knows a lot about what you require. You don't need to be a VAG specialist, to know how set up a bike carb conversion on a VAG car. These places will have as much, if not more to offer from experience and knowledge.

hes talking about chris with a green mk1 golf, works in a garage in macc and is a top fella, be more than willing to help.

in your moan you went on about awesome and dubsport who both really arent interested in carb based conversions, mainly due to probably lack of experience.

the only place you should really be considering if you are planning on a bike carb conversion is bogg bros if your not planning on doing it yourself, you can even just send your inlet manifold to them, they can do all the neccessary work to in the inlet mani, jet the carbs and just send it back to you ready for install, I'm pretty sure the throttle cable is bodged to use your standard cable.

Saf speaks the truth.

If your really stuck on this give "Bort" a pm on here. He's recently gone through the same process with Bogg Bros & has been more than happy.

Yeah thats the guy. dont think he will be able to take on the work himself because he might be quite busy but he knows some decent facts so its worth giving him a shout on the matter.

yeh i know riley top bloke he works 2 minutes down the road from my girlfriends houe he has a top car too, might be worth giving him a try

Chers for the encouragement folks, at least I'm not the only one out there pissed of with the big boys cheque book hero scene!

I'm gonna contact bogg bros today and ask them how long there turn around is and how much, if not ill crack on with the other suggestions!

Fight the power lads!, 20VT doing less than 20mpg, or 1.6 AEE on carbs, hopfully getting near 30mpg I know what id prefer!

I thought this might make you giggle.....was down a bodyshop today doing a bit of business with the owner & he had a Renault 5 in the spray booth.

Low and behold the R5 was packing a 20VT 225 lump from a TT...................

The word is spreading

Funny you should say that Hoppy as i was talking to a guy the other night whos in to renaults and hes saying that more and more people are opting for VAG 20v T engines in their 5's and clios etc because they are wanting something more reliable and something that can handle biggger BHP figures on standard internals. Seems the VAG scene is spreading in to French Cars :-o:smile:

Theres a tt poweres lotus elise in warrington, a rover metro in liverpool with a 20VT (dunno what bhp)

and I've seen loads of chaterams now sporting them too!

Altough by the sounds of things the 20VT has had its day as "the tuners engine", apparently its all about the new(ish) volvo 5pot turbo thats in the new ST!, proper playable!

Thats pretty shit really. Some Golf owners think they are the shiz.

I'm currently putting a 1.6 AEE in a mk3 GT, carnt wait to get out and show some mk2 gti's up.

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...=109565&hl=

thats my build thread, i would reccomend you do it yourself, once the inlet and engine mount is sorted its easy.

I'm going to be running mine on GT injection with bigger injectors, as for 30mpg on bike carbs......

Joel has got a mk2 1.6 AEE on bike carbs and he gets 20ish mpg i believe. GT injection on the this engine should offer 35 - 40mpg. With hardly any difference in power.

If you decide to have ago yourself and your in the midlands area I'm up for giving you a hand if you need it.

Yep.

:paranoid:

Mate, i see where youre coming from but they have to make money at the end of the day. Why would they book you in to do a conversion for loose change when they could book someone else in and have the space to gain £5k+

That doesnt make sense, they charge you for time and materials, so if this guys conversion took a short time they would charge him less, but it would also have cost them less. With a 20vt conversion they charge more money, but it costs them more to do it so they make the same money per hour or whatever. And if the AEE conversion did cause trouble and take them a long time they would charge him more, so they wouldnt lose out.
