How doesnt it make sense? :?

Two people want engine conversions, one wants one that will cost £5k minimum and the other wants one that will be less than half that

They both go to the same garage, but the garage only has space, staff for one of them

Commen sense would guide said garage owner to book the more expensive conversion in.

Yes the cheaper conversion would probs only take half the time, but to warrent the garage owner booking that in there would have to be another person wanting the same conversion ready to go in right away/soon as the space is free

The more expensive one would "buy them time" for another booking (no doubt they will have a few lined up anyway) thus being a no brainer choice

Now, I'm not a business man so i appolagise if I've got the wrong end of the stick there, but that seems like the bright way to deal to me?????

Have you thought about using the possible labour charges to buy a decent set of tools, a Haynes manual and giving it a go yourself? I'm no mechanic but if you're in no rush to get done (ie. if it's not your daily car) then just chip away at it bit by bit with a mug of tea and if you get stuck then just ask the questions on here. Everyone loves a tryer and you're far more likely to get a reply than someone posting another "I'm thinking about doing..." post, so I don't think you'd struggle on knowledge.

There might be part of your situation that doesn't allow you to "have a go" and if there is, I apologise, just trying to offer another angle on things :)

Bang on idea leigh, i just wouldnt feel 100% confident in myself doing it all,

I used to have minis back in the day and i changed both the engines in them to 1275's, but that WAS a piece of piss, this could be a wee bit tougher, and its also the manifold bit I'm gunna struggle with?

And my car is my daily too! piss

karl is considering bikes carbs, and we had a look at the inlet manifold and it looks a bit of a mare to cut down and bodge for use for carbs as chambers 1 and 2, and 3 and 4 are rather close together and they bend initially before meeting the actual inner part of the manifold, so cutting them off before the bend would give you very little room to fix some silicone hosing and allow you to get access to the manifold studs aswell.

the plate made from a template of a gasket made by joel was class and he had four straight tubes coming off the inlet manifold, there is a bit of an art to the length of the inlet manifold chambers.

speak to chris with the green mk1 gti on 9 inch powertechs and 1.4 16v engine on carbs, he would be more than willing to share experience and possibly help out at a cost, but if you really want a job done and done well the first time i would once again recommend bogg bros, as they have been playing with them for years now and they have done a far few bike carb conversions.

and once you have your built up inlet manifold with carbs fitted and jetted, itll be simple enough to fit it all to your engine.

is there any mates you can borrow a wee runner for a week or so while you sort the car out and get all the niggles out the way.

phone bogg bros tho as if you get the car to them I'm sure they will be able to do the whole work on site and give you back a running car, but I'm not sure of costs to give you a guesstimate.

whats the olop currently looking like now as i haven't seen it for about a year when i caught up with you as some service station in prestonia or sumwhere on the m6

When was that bud?, dont remember that lill meet up?

Here she was a few week ago Pic331.jpg

Well it might be a bit more tricky than the 1275 swap but you've obviously had spanners in your hands before so just have a good read up and get the bottom end in first, run that on the existing inlet and then look at sending it off to bogg brothers for the inlet and carbs. If you can do it something like that then you'll have some hand in building it, know it's been done with care and have spent less money!

Its not the most expensive job the garages 'should' be interested in its the one that brings them the most profit for least amount of work.

A 5k job to the customer might cost the garage might cost the garage 4.5k in parts (making £500 profit) and labour but a simple job that cost £500 to the customer might cost the garage £300 in parts and labour netting £200 profit but if a garage can 4 of them in less or equal time than the more expensive job then it makes them more money.

Most expensive job to customer does not automatically mean most money made. Sure.. some times it does but not all ways. Its normally the case the quicker you can get cars in and out the more money you make.
