1. Regarding wheel width, they must not protrude more than 30mm beyond the wheel arches. (Council Directive 78/549/EEC)

2. Regarding the fitting of the tyre "Each tyre fitted to the vehicle shall be of a nominal size appropriate to the wheel to which it is fitted." Sec16(4 The Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2001'. The fact that the fit was outside manufacturers recommendations should be very persuasive to convince a court that the tyre was not fitted in a manner suitable to qualify it as 'approved'.

3. Section 40A RTA 1988 states "A person is guilty of an offence if he uses, or causes or permits another to use, a motor vehicle or trailer on a road when...the condition of the motor vehicle...or of its accessories or equipment...is such that the use of the motor vehicle or trailer involves a danger of injury to any person." Evidence to support this offence would include measurements of your wheel and tyre, and statements from the manufacturer or a tyre expert, indicating the potential risk of fitting outside their recommended parameters, namely, overheating, grip loss, unpredictable performance and behaviour etc etc.

4. If your vehicle was involved in a collision, especially one involving injury, where the cause led to the loss of control of your vehicle, dangerous driving may be considered, especially strengthened by Sec 2A(2) where "A person is also to be regarded as driving dangerously for the purposes of section 1 and 2 above if it would be obvious to a competent and careful driver that driving the vehicle in its current state would be dangerous."

In each case the facts would be able to be presented to court for their consideration, suffice to say if I saw your vehicle on the road with the tyres you describe, I'd certainly be looking into the S40A RTA offence, Number 3) on the list, supported by the offences evidenced at 1) and 2).

I'd also be looking at the no insurance angle. What have you told your insurers btw?

All in all, I shouldn't bother if I were you. HTH

This mainly seem to deal with mainly stretch tyres and their use. It looks likes Foxies wheels are fine regarding point 1 but not for the other 3 points. So does this mean that if the motoring offence what specifically to do with the wide wheels and not the stretch then it should be dropped??? but either way it looks like if you are running tyres on rims larger than then manufacture recommends then you can be charged with an offence and possible be convicted using the points above.

But now foxie was giving points and fine for dangerous sticking out wheels that's why the officer tuck pictures for his evidence so if foxie goes to court this is the crime he will be fighting not stretched tyres or invalid insurance or any thing else,

No. go to court and fight!!!!

yes. go to court but only if you can get an MOT with your wheels on witch might get the points removed but please check with a layer you will be dealing with the court and not the police and they will deal with you more as an individual and with more understanding this could get the points removed and maybe just a fine!

Foxie got pulled for (Driving a car in ) dangerous and un-roadworthy condition has he states (and not specifically driving a car with wheels poking out of the arches). So (Driving a car in) dangerous and un-roadworthy condition would also cover the stretch on the tyres. Whether the Police who charged him know this or not is a different matter. but good luck.

If you ask the cop, musn't he be able to tell you the law that your braking? Or at least where to start looking as in what section?

Otherwise I couldn't see cops giving out tickets for things they think might be against the law

Secondly what about the old classic style wheels such as the ones below. Surely the centres of those are sticking way out?

Firstly, its PROtrude, not pertrude, which isn't even a word!

Secondly, the reason that tyre tread (not wheels rims) are not allowed to protrude past the edge of an arch had nothing to do with the wheel sticking out and hitting pedestrians, its to prevent spray from the wheels when driving in wet weather affecting the driver behind you.

I run wide wheels, so I'm not saying running them is bad, just informing you of the reasons behind the law.

If its your first 3 points.. dont worry..

If your on 3.. 6 is still ok

If your on 6... 9 is shit .. insurance is a BITCH

If your on 9... 12 is still ok to drive on.. its more than 12 being a BAN I have been advised.. (dont quote me though)

its not really because of wet weather! its to avoid mud and stones from being flicked by the tyres tread in to cars that are following from behinds direction!!
