I'll try and describe it the best I can.

Seen them a fair few times now, just look like two lengths of black rope stretched accross the width of the road and are about a meter apart.

Anyone know what they're for?

Are they always at roadworks right by the tempory lights? Power cables.

i think there for measureing speed, measures the time it takes to cross them or something someone told me

usually used on urban roads were locals have complained about the amount of traffic

i know wht u mean. they are for the council so they can study the amount of traffic on that route.

they are connected to a little black box at the side of the road which the chain to a lamp post so nobody can nick it. :-D .

we had one at a level crossing round the corner from me, along with a camera which i found pretty strange!

Been a c*** many times in my past and locked up my handbrake over some! TWANG!

They do that alot round here, you see them there for a couple of days then they're laying by the kerb with two big black lines across where they were!

i belive they record speed aswell as amount of vehicles, thats why there's two lines, it measures time it takes between running over the first and second one!

they see how much traffic is on the road at certain times of the day and also they wont do a speed check

I always go really slow over them, to bring the average speed down

If the round black 'rope' is proud of the surface then it is there for monitoring purposes. 1 'rope' for traffic counting, 2 'ropes' for speed checking. This is done for surveys only, not to convict speeders. You will normally see a grey metal box at the side of the road chained to a lamp post with the recording equipment. Or if there is just one that's kinda flat looking its probably just there to protect power cables. These are normally at roadworks for the power cables for traffic lights.

Round the country there are now fixed mobile speed trap locations (if that makes sense). You will notice these by the 3 black duck tape markings covering the lane and a green or grey thin box about a meter high at the side of the road. This allow the police or private 'Safety Camera' companies to plug their cameras into the sensors in the road to calculate speed and issue tickets to speeders.

Spoke to my friend at the Highways Agency, and he say's they are simply for traffic counting in area's which are used as rat-runs for commuters. Depending on results, speed bumps could be added to the area (FFS)

^^ Correct they are average speed sensors which count the traffic and create an average speed over a designated time.

My parents had to pay the bloody council to do such a survey to determin how safe their avenue entrance would be for sight lines and traffic hazards . They want to build another property and the only way they can is to move the bloody avenue entrance further up the road. It's been there for over two hundred years! We're talking about the same arse holes who are in charge of all the speed calming measures like speed bumps.

If your sumps that low to the ground I'd be worried! One hit from a stone or bump in the road will leave you with very little oil and a siezed engine!

Also your splitter and subframe and suspension arms would be constantly on the deck...I'd have thought anyway!

hes probably refering to the black box.. i think he has more chance of hitting one of them than a wire with his sump!

its deffo not your sump mate, there would be grate but wholes in you are splitter n front bumper, along with grooves following you car everywhere u go from where subframe is churning up road!
