1.4 16v MK4 Engine in a MK3 GT

Featured Replies

As the title suggests would it be possible for me to drop a 1.4 16v engine into a MK3 Polo GT Coupe and if so how much work would need to be done? Would i require mounts making or do they use the same mount points? Are the 1.4 16v more tuneable than the 1.3 GT engine?

Cheers guys and girls :-)

G40 it tbh.... more fun and probly more straight forward

So hard to find a g40 lump tho :-( and they are well expensive even for a bad example.

i would go for the 16v myself, they are getting cheap to pick up and a few people have fitted them into mk2/3s now so it shouldnt be hard to find out what is involved. fairly tuneable engine too

Anything is possible, but for what you will spend buying a GT and an AFH engine surely it would be cheaper to by a Mk4 16v?

That is true but how amusing would it be to have a 1.4 16v in a mk3 and tune it possibly beat some saxo's i think id prefer the Mk3 with a hidden weapon under the bonnet than a mk4 as i already have a 1.6 mk4.

Id have gone for this engine but there wernt any for sale at the time, g40 would be quicker but alot more exspensive.

I agree about having something different, plus the mk3 is a lighter car so will be quicker then the mk4 valver

Do it!

Personally I wouldn't go out on the lookout for a Polo GT if you're gonna remove the engine and box anyway. I'd sooner source the best condition car I could regardless of engine size.

The AFH does fit, but it isn't cheap to make any real worthwhile gains from. What it really needs is a set of bike carbs or better still throttle bodies on management, a decent 4 branch exhaust manifold and a pair of uprated cams with verniers. This should see a genuine 140-150bhp and would sound lovely.

However then you have to think about gearboxes, and the 16v box is notoriously unreliable.

I'd think long and hard before going ahead with this. To do it properly it won't be cheap.

Suitably modified, a GT can produce well over 90 bhp and is great fun. It also has a nice close ratio gearbox (low final drive ratio actually) that is very strong.

What is involved in fitting ther AFH lump? are mounts required to be made and so on?

Cheers for all the help so far guys :o)

Also another quick question will i need a catalytic converter? Is the law on a cat tied to the car or the engine? so could i put a say 1995 reg engine into a 92 car and not need a cat converter?

Don't do it just to beat saxo's! The Mk4 AFH can fight off much bigger and better cars than your average chavvy saxo! The standard GT can beat a VTR with ease!

Tuning an AFH can get expensive though.

You can still buy the Group N cams and pulleys but I've heard your upwards of £500 for that, then there is fitting and mapping. But apparently with that you can see around 140-150bhp! 8-)

i will be AFHing my mk2 this winter (providing I've got enough money to build the enfine to the spec i want)

from what i understand its the gearbox mount that needs fabing up.......

I'm not sute about the cat issue but I'm underthe impression that its the car that needs the car not the engine....

I've noticed my 1.6 AEE can give some stuff a run for its money espically off the line. Will a GT beat a VTS? 150 BHP under the hood of a MK3 would be something special indeed. Tell me whats needed to get it done and ill go ahead with it.

Emissions date SHOULD go with the engine... so a post-92 engine really needs a cat, but you will get away with it in an early shell.

a GT won't beat a VTS but a valver would give it a run for its money I reckon, an AFH in a Mk3 should beat it though!

Yeah its not the engine but the year the car was registered. 93/K > and you need a cat.

Yet another good reason for choosing an old car to modify. You can fit a right bruiser of an engine in without worrying about emissions! 8-)

Nahhh no chance of a GT even keeping up with a VTS to 20 mph lol, standard vs standard a VTS would probably piss a G40 off!

engine mounts are fine. the alternator side one is one bolt short of the mk3 mount but you can extend it down and use the power steering bracket as part of that.

I have a pic some where ? give me 5 mins

There you go ....... extend the brkt down to the power steering mtg points to keep the engine from placing extra stress on just two holes. Pinches machined off 4-5mm off the brkt to allow for the material thickness but I'm not sure that that was realy necessary ..... afterall its on rubber mounts so the should take up a little thickness.

the bit i machined off the back should just make it a bit easier to line up to get in the car if you've had it out really

So if i buy the car and an engine i can drop the engine in on existing mounts? Then all i really need to do mounting wise is the alternator bracket? Do the drive shafts from the valver engine fit the mk3 ok will i have any other major issues?

16V is by far the cheapest option if your running all the std parts. Got my 70k mile engine complete with loom and ecu etc for 200 english pounds and it looks like itll go in with little hassel. I fabricated a similar mount as project 2006 and pinch and its lovely!

As for drive shafts, using a gearbox from an earlier model. ( I HOPE! as its not all together yet as I'm on work placement away from home)I will be using the 16V clutch, which i think is the same as a g40 one?

Oh mines in a MK1 with four branch on bike carbs. which is nice.

I will post photos next week when it goes in, theres a photo of the engine out of the car somewhere....

edit, its only cheap if you dont plan to upgrade the cams etc..... then remember you have to pay for twins!

True on the twin cam side of things but that engine has got to have some potential being a DOHC. I cant wait to get all the bits together and start work on this. Once the engine is in and secured will there be much more to do that i haven't thought of? obviously connecting loom and coolant pipes and fitting all other misc bits. I've never done an engine conversion before so any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers for the help so far all :-)

no problems dooode
