a GT won't beat a VTS but a valver would give it a run for its money I reckon, an AFH in a Mk3 should beat it though!

A mk4 16v would get destroyed by a VTS.

16v in a Mk3 is a good idea. AFH is suppose to have a great head and with the right induction set up there is scope for serious amounts of power, easily equaling anything a G40 can produce with the right budget. Go for it!

I'm in the middle of building my polo with an AFH conversion.

Mechanically its been a doddle to build, but I made it complicated by using a mk4 alternator and pulleys.

The main issue I had was that my down pipe is very close to the anti roll bar as I used a standard manifold and downpipe.

Electrics are ok aswell, but you have the issue of the immobiliser. I got mine decoded through a company called IC systems, google it to get number.

I will be posting some pics when I finish all the little things off this weekend.

Polo 13 would it be easier to use a mk3 alternator then? What manifold and down pipe would you be easier to use? What was the base car you used was it a GT or a Genisis?

use the mk3 engine mount and alternator i assume? i haven't actually got to the pulleys on mine yet, i am getting things acid dipped etc

Base car was a 1993 Coupe Fox 1.05l

I would try to use as much mk3 parts as possible to be honest.

I was thinking of using an early mk4 alternator and pulley that has the spring adjuster and then use the mk3 bracket

to attatch it to.

But like I said I used the later type with a custom bracket made of a later type mk4 alt bracket and a mk3 bracket welded together which work really well.

I then had to use a 'random' 5 rib belt, I think the length was 803mm.

It sounds abit confusing, but when i get the pics up it will make sense!!!!!!

The parts I've used to build are as follows;

Mk3 GT g'box

GT clutch flywheel and sandwhich plate

Standard g'box mounts

Mk3 starter

Custom drivers side driveshaft, beefed up basically!! used a Mk2 golf shaft shortened it etc

Home made intake using a SFS silicone 2.5" 90degree bend, short bit of 2.5" stainless pipe (approx 5-6") and a jetex cone filter.

home made EGR blanking kit

mixture of mk4 polo wiring and GT wiring for engine

Mk1 Golf top fill radiator with GT cooling fan and shroud

Thats about all I can remember!!

Sounds like it could get expensive haha. Where did you get the mount welded? I would prob be looking at doing the same but with a 1.3 as a base model.

So far it has cost me about £600 including the engine, its been a case of "its not what you know, but who you know"!!!!

And also the fact that I collect parts!!!

I got the welding done by a local firm, I know the lads that work there so got it done on the cheap.

If you do get it welded, make sure its a VERY good job as it will be put under alot of stress!!

I would say it will cost me not alot more as it starts and drives now, it just needs time to tidy it up!!

I'm hoping to be showing it off at the polo show in september!!

Would the easiest conversion for this be to use the Mk3 polo as a base car and then the 1.4 16v and gearbox that comes on the AFH and standard drive shafts (do they fit)

you can use the mk4 box dunno why you would bother. a couple of people have used mk4 boxes as replacements in mk3s

no servo on mk1/2 so not a problem on them

Pshears that is a very interesting point you bring up there. Anyone able to answer this?

The AFH does fit, but it isn't cheap to make any real worthwhile gains from.

The 140bhp that Jez got from fitting a £150 1.6 GTI bottom end and GTI injectors seems like cheap gains to me. Okay there's the cost of a head gasket kit etc. on top - but the costs are comparable to sticking a cam, 4-branch and chip into a GT.

However then you have to think about gearboxes, and the 16v box is notoriously unreliable.

In the 6N chassis perhaps, but bear in mind that the 6N 'boxes are still 085-series transmissions, and as such are mechanically identical to the Mk2/3 'boxes (aside from larger diff pinion gears in some of the 6Ns, plus cable-change gubbins on some of them). I suspect that the 'box reliability issues on a lot of the 6Ns is down to excessive lowering putting weird loads on the inner CVs (and diff) and probably lack of oil.

There is plenty room for the servo in a mk3, probably about 3-4inches in fact.

As for the g'box, I'm using a gt one with a modified O/S driveshaft.

I have pics of everything, I want to post them now but I cant find my USB cable for the camera!!!

My car went through its MOT today, the only problem was my emisions were slightly high.

Just needs a few tweaks and she will be flying!!!

The power delivery is amazing, torque is really good from low down the rev range.

I will have the pics up ASAP!!!
