On the road oddities..........

Featured Replies

I was talking with a mate a few nights ago about how rare it is to see cars that were so common when we were growing up (late 80's early 90's)

Things like:-

Ford Sierra

Ford Escort MK3 & Mk4

Fiesta MK2

Vauxhall Astra mk3

Vauxhall Nova

Vauxhall Senator

VW MK2 Passats

Renault 5

Renault 11

Renault 19

Peugot 104

Peugot 505

Peugot 309

Vauxhall Cavalier

Volvo 340

When was the last time you saw one? They all seem to have vanished or dissolved!

well having learnt to drive in a renault 11 i reckon most of them have probably rolled into a ditch due to their ultra soft suspension! I've recently seen a fair amount of those cars on your list, mostly in the scrappy though!

I see novas once or twice a week round here. And almost without fail, once a month at No-Rice thanks to idiotic chavs.

Lots of mk2 fiestas around too!

Well my mum's got a Mk3 Astra and there is both an S1 and S2 RS Turbo going about Peterhead so that's 3 cars on your list... Other than that, ages since I saw any!

Adding to Toby's mentioned cars, there are Nova's and a cavi about Peterhead too and my dad used to own a renault 19

When I travelled down to england at the weekend though I think I could knock off everything on your list apart from the Peugoet 104, 505 and Volvo 340.

The Mk2 Passat is an interesting one... the only time I've ever seen one is at a VW meet!

funny this as me and kam were down at BVF at the weekend, we saw a few sierra's and I commented on the fact you don't see many about.

Then on the way to get pizza, we saw a mk2 fezzy and an E reg astra Belmont (chavved up to the hilt!)

The only renaults in your list you see now are the 5 turbo's, though I did see an immaculate 21 turbo the other day.

couple of weeks ago i saw about 10 mk1&2 escorts in convoy up the m6, was impressive some really tidy cars there :D

Don't see anything at all BL any more either, 'cept a handful of Austin Metro's. Used to be loads of Maestro's, Montego's and whatnot about, all rotted to dust now!

I still don't think of my 1990 polo as an old car (hells, I dont think of my 1982 honda as an old bike either!) but thinking about it you really dont see much from that era on the road anymore.

look out my flat window can see the mintest R5..

shame engine is fubar'ed!!

You only have to go down a decent knackers yard to answer that LOL Most have long rotted away or fallen apart. There was a complety stock, but rotten mk1 Astra GTE down the breakers last time i was in!

Its going to get even tougher for older cars thesedays too . Insurance companies will easily write a car off due to the cost of new water based paints (~3 times dearer to buy than solvent based) meaning uneconomical repairs.

My Sierra

lotus carlton...how many of them do you see!

lotus carlton...how many of them do you see!

not many! i'm hoping to get a ride in one, as my birds, sisters, blokes, parents own one, god that could be confusing to read!

so your inbred?

nah kiddin, yeah aparently there pretty rapid!!, sleeper too, just small bits, like fat back tyres and slight body kit....and lotus badge on back obviously lol

bet i could find most of them cars in my local scrappers. slowly going away. we used to have a sierra haha, was a bag of shite though  that ended up at the scrappers

lotus carlton...how many of them do you see!

Not many, iirc you can count on one hand how many official ones were built.

I was talking with a mate a few nights ago about how rare it is to see cars that were so common when we were growing up (late 80's early 90's)

Things like:-

Ford Sierra - All the time still.

Ford Escort MK3 & Mk4 - See loads of mk4s but rarely mk3s

Fiesta MK2 - Rarely

Vauxhall Astra mk3 - Most days, whys this on here?

Vauxhall Nova - rarely but weekly at meets

Vauxhall Senator - never heard of it

VW MK2 Passats - occasionally

Renault 5 - few a week

Renault 11 - never heard of it

Renault 19 - one on my nanas street, which is owned by an old guy and is immaculate!

Peugot 104 - 104?

Peugot 505 - years ago

Peugot 309 - see above

Vauxhall Cavalier - Regularly

Volvo 340 - rarely

When was the last time you saw one? They all seem to have vanished or dissolved!

Also noticed that black 6ns and 6n2s are pretty rare, most seem to be silver or red.

You dont have to go too far back, the Maestro and Montego's were still being made in 1993,and we're living in an age where original shape minis are no longer a daily sight - for the first time since the 60s.

The 90s BMW 5-series seems to be disappearing, though big cars like the Granada and Carlton were always going to vanish as abruptly as the Nissan Bluebird.

I think I'm just old.

I prefer the mk-three escorts all day long their a nicer shape to the shitty mk6 ones i see flying around, seen a couple of sierra cosworths recently too, think their was only one lotus carlton at bromley paegant.. best vauxhall ever made? 8-)

Saw 2 mk1 fiestas and an immaculate escort Mexico on Friday night. love them

There's an old guy on my street that still has a Morris Ital!! Still going, but looks a bit on the rusty side.

must be all the 80's banger's round here, i see all the list bar the last three pug's on the regular!

there's a couple of lotus carlton's a fair few cossies escort and sierra, rs500's, rs2000's, rs1600i's, series 1 rst's, mk1 mexico, mk1 + 2 escort vans.

mk1 supra, mk1 corrolla and even a mk1 mazda 323 4x4 turbo at windsor cruise!

a fella down my road has got a 87 cav sri too,

two of my mates have mk1 golf's 1 x gti 1.8, 1 x g40 and an escort cossie

another has a g40, caddy g40, and mini van old school stylee, he used to have an 1800 zetec mk1 fiesta.

another mate has a rs2000,

another has the mintest mk1 mexico running the fastest/most powerful lotus bda lump in the country which is on youtube both his brothers have high spec sierra cosworths and his dad has a mk1 escort mk2 and a cossied mk2 van.

The Mk2 Passat is an interesting one... the only time I've ever seen one is at a VW meet!
