you can run 5% bioethonal mix in standard unleaded cars!

it'll produce less pollution but would there be any power differnce?

The trouble with fermenting is making a really pure mixture ie no water content

I heard most cars can handle a 10% mix but i would like a 100% :) check the combustion rate compared to petrol

I think I would happily pay a chunk to get my car to run on an alternative fuel, even if it was more costly in the long run then running petrol, purely based on not giving the tax to the fat cats.

LPG would be practically free if it wasn't for the tax though... it's still heavily taxed just not as heavy as petrol/diesel

Walked out of tescos today and saw some guy filling his land rover up wiht a drum of cooking oil he had just bought. Was funny looking at his wife hiding in the front seat!

I ran my GT on ethanol for a while. Ended up with about 10-15% by the time I finished messing around.

Its possible to get additives to neutralise the effects of ethanol [in term of corrosion].

I can honestly say I never noticed a major difference. Although I am going to make a Ethanol map for my G on about 10%

I work in the agricultural trade & have been looking at ethanol production for a while.

There was a Saab 900 which off the peg was designed to run ethanol a while back, nothing startling these days. But looking at it from a cost point of view alot of the fuels track the cost crude oil, which means they will be there or there abouts on price when they are being traded.

The good news is you can make it yourself, all you need is lots of Oil Seed Rape and lots of money to build your own crush!!!

Ethanol is taxed just like petrol, hence customs & excise confiscations for being over limits. If i had a 2001> car i'd deffo get an LPG conversion.

i dont think there is a vehicle excise duty drop on converted cars as they could still be run on petrol (thats how i understand it)

was looking into this when i was looking at Land Rover Disco V8s

I'm running on a circa 40/60 mix of bio-ethanol/99ron unleaded,and I've noticed little difference. Seems to run a little better on it if anything,but its hard to tell as i think the dizzy advance is playing up.

zinc, brass and alooominumm don't really like ethanol.

natural rubber and PU and don't really like it although i am not sure where you will fine these in a Polo fuel line. certain polymers used in piping/seal also die. I cant give you the names. If you want chemical names your best of searching for info on alcohol erosion of polymers as the same rules apply for ethanol, methanol etc.

give me your email if you want a paper on converting a car to run on E85. It has tables about the corrosion of materials in the presence of

ethanol. Although to do things properly you need to consider galvanic corrosion.

Its a university project and they had to do everything, even down to getting a perfect Cold Idle Map. Some interesting stuff about air assisted injectors

But the general summary is - use Neoprene fuel lines

e85 can errode rubber hoses quite bad, but sometimes it doesnt when it should like. best thing to do is test various bits of pipes in a jar of e85 for a few weeks to see what happens. Fuel pumps and injectors usually take a beating too. ethanol can improve performance too, but its only really noticable in high performance engines (like motorbike engines). otherwise it just improves fuel economy. Lotus did some research a few years again which is a good read. oh and bio-fuel isnt as clean as you think. more pollution is put into the atmophere turning oil seed rape into fuel then oil to petrol so in the long run petrol is still the cleaner fuel!!

Cheers Giorgio,Andy. Yeah,I'm using Japanese bike carbs with brass jets,not sure about the fuel tank (which seems to be zinc galvanised - at least on the outside),and obviously there's alot of aluminium involved.

My primary concerns are with the fuel lines,which i intend to convert to nylon if that's ideal,and the inlet pipes which are PVC.

I'll be looking into the manufacturing impact of bio,too.

^^ It needs to be cut down with white spirit iirc,which is proper harmful to the environment - Pure pikey.
