hi, i was wondering if anybody can help me.

when i need to put my polo into reverse, sometimes i have to turn my engine off, put it into reverse gear and then start the engine up again.

i need to do this because the gears grind like hell, someone said to me that the clutch might need adjusting ?

i am a little woried as i dont know why it does it, and as i said some times it does it and some times it doesnt.

i know its not my fault, e.g. not putting the clutch in all the way or putting it into reverse too quickly, as i held the clutch in down to the floor for about a minuite last night before trying to reverse but it still made the grinding noise. (not just a few clicky taps and in it goes, but a real grind like i aint even holding the clutch in at all) it makes me feel like an absolute idiot in a car park situation

any help would be greatly appreciated.

reverse has no syncromesh iirc try putting it into first then putting it into reverse

That's what I do, never had it happen since I started 1st gearing it first.

thanks for your help guys, but i have just tried that, but still no luck,

this may make a difference, I'm not sure but here goes,

there is a hill near me, and you can go down it doing arround 40 and in 4th (arround 1500 - 2000 revs) when i do there is a whiring noise coming from somewhere, and i was wondering if that could be the gear box oil or something, if it is how do you top it up ?

if its a quiet wirring i recon its the release bearing or if its loud it could be the box

mine used to do this and made a major clunk every time, i tightened up the clutch cable a little and hey presto went in smoothly everytime, it was the same effect as if i want putting my clutch fully in....

its worth a try and a 5 minute job to do :-)

aye.. i would definitely go for adjusting the clutch cable first.. its clipped onto the bulkhead on 6n's with a black "twist-grip" in the middle of it.. just keep tightening it up a little bit until you get a better clutch...

just dont go overboard as you dont want your clutch slipping lol

if that doesnt work and it still crunches, could be the gearbox on its way out

you have all helped me to fix the problem and now she goes into reverse sweet as F everytime.

the clutch cable stretches so means when you put your clutch fully down, it doesnt go quite in enough for it to be a smooth gear change and so crunches.

Mine does this too! The trick to stop it doing it is to stop in 2nd - knock it into neutral - release the clutch - press clutch then change into reverse - NO CRUNCH! :)

yup, definatly what he said, as i tried every bloody gear before reverse but it still grinded like hell.

a little adjustment and now its perrrrfect

usualy stick it in 1st then no crunch, but my gear box is making the wirring sound its not to loud might have to chuck it in the garage get them to look at it .

my car does this whirring noise too i think,

when i depress the clutch pedal it makes the whirring sound, but only when I'm moving (rolling to a stop to put it back into 1st to pull off again)

BUT it doesn't make the noise at all when I'm driving allong, only when i depress the clutch pedal.

any ideas at all ?

Thanks for the info on putting it into first then reverse, worked like a charm, was getting so pissed off with it grinding all the time. lol everytime I'm about to park it grinds and you get funny looks from everyone.

no no no, when i put my foot down on the clutch pedal to change gear when moving i get the whiring,

not when i release the clutch once I'm in gear
