Each time I get a faster car.. in general I tend to drive more slowly?!

that is beacuse your a willy woofter when it comes to the right foot... if your rad did 60mpg at faster speeds methinks you'd use a bit more juice... having said that i'm getting 27mpg outa my 2.0 passat on my daily commute...must...slow...down!! stu claims to be getting 30mpg!!!!

Me and a friend were racing down the M45. One of the emptiest roads in the world, its lovely.

I was in my shit-box mk3 golf

Both went from a standing start. First to chicken out looses. Must of been at 100+ mph. My golf was making all sorts of crazy noises but out of nowhere an Astra came screaming up behind us and flicked on the blues.

We both came to a stop on the hard shoulder and the copper drove inbetween us and shouted 'Your lucky I got better things to do or you both would be without a liscence' Never shat myself so much in all my life.

The event pretty much killed off any 'ring racing action for a good few weeks:-(

some people really piss me off with there speeding actally, if anyone knows were the OKdinner is in bridgetown in cannock, i was driving down past there the other night and these fookin chavs in a nova and something else, didn't get a peroper look, came zoomin past, gotta be about 80 at least, thiswas in a 30, come right up behined me, anougthe car comin the other way and a scamera, so they get flashed by that as well.

man just really pissed me off, giving young drivers a bad name in turn givein us our high insurance and they could have easily gone into the back off me or the other driver, writin me car off and/or givin me serious injuries or death .

A lad i know was parked up at Mca D's, and this local knob head was out in his dads Merc (50-something plate C class)..

Doing little burnouts while waiting in the queue to get round, slipped the brake and bumped the lads car in front, got out (4's up, lad in front was alone) knocked him out ..

i got caught doin 110 in a 60 with german plates and 2 bald tyres! the copper overtook 2 cars to chatch me :s but all he said is slow down and dont let me catch u again! i was s**tin it!

I just wanted to ask when people say they have been doing X speed in a 30 zone- are they doing this in a residential area or on like a main road where the speed limit is 30mph. In my view doing excessive speeding in a residential area is very dangerous but 'testing out the car' a bit in a non-residential area with no other motorists near you (e.g. at 2am) is ok as your only putting yourslef at risk and no-one else. But i hope you guys that have done 100 in 30's are talkin non-res.

First time I have been pulled over in almost 5 years on the road...

I was coming off an overtake on a long straight and as I returned to my side of the road and let off the accelerator I spotted the nose of a police car, followed by the traffic officer and his radar gun, off to my right. He was literally hiding in a bush as he was completely concealed from view until I was about 50 meters from him. Good concealed spot half way a long a nice open straight. Given that I was already slowing back down to the limit I pressed the brakes a bit harder in an futile attempt at damage control. I saw him my mirror running to the Volvo so I pulled in at the first safe opportunity, parked up, turned off and decamped so he wouldn't have to bother chasing after me and potentially having to over take cars on the up coming windy section.

He got out and shouted "WELL THEN!?!?!" at which point I started shitting myself a bit... I just apologised and said yeah I know I was speeding. He asked if I knew what speed I was doing to which I replied I didn't know...this upset him a bit but I explained that I knew I was in 3rd gear and traveling a bit over the limit, I was concentrating on completing the maneuver safely/in good time...rather than the exact number on the speedometer. I knew I was just north of 80 but wasn't quite sure how bad it was going to be...when he said 84mph I was a little relived...but also had the feeling of "damn that was too close"...6mph more and it'd have been classed as dangerous driving. I don't think he realised I had been overtaking...I'm not sure it made much difference...

I explained I had been following a BMW doing 40/50mph and the straight presented a long clear stretch in which to pass...conditions were dry and traffic was light. The mistake I made was staying out and passing the next car as well, given that the road was still clear and I was carrying good speed...in hind sight I should have pulled in and waited another 5 or 6 bends for the next straight but it's not quite so long and has a blind corner at the end with a junction at the apex. It only presents a very small window in which to pass.

Apparently between 17:00-19:00 is a hot spot for speeders on a Friday and Saturday so they are out with the radar gun at these times. I think given that I was completing an overtake, the weather was good, car is in good shape and I didn't across like a total arsehole (lucky he doesn't read my forum posts ) helped. He was also on his own...had he not been he said I'd have been done (could so easily have gone this way). I got a good stern talking to about road safety...given that I'm in the IAM I am quite aware...but maybe I should remind myself a little more often?

Conclusions...I'll always opt to exceed the speed limit to complete an overtake in good time if required, but I need to learn when enough is enough and be more patient, IAM is about skill with responsibility after all. I need to impose my own limit so as not potentially get in more trouble than is strictly necessary. Shouldn't really need to overtake if it requires going more than 10-15mph over the limit to complete. I know full well how the police are taught to drive and had it been him I am sure he'd have done exactly the same thing...getting him to admit would be nigh on impossible though.

I enjoy driving briskly on good roads but it is so difficult to do with a completely clear conscience no matter how safe you think you are driving...maybe track days are the only real way to enjoy driving in a completely safe way? No one wants to have an accident and it'd be worse if the only reason was that you were pushing on a bit too much...pushing on can be below the limit to after all... You never know what is around the next corner...cyclist..walker...crashed car...cow?! It is possible to come across someone walking on what appears to be a deserted dual carriageway/motorway in the middle of the night...10mph could be the difference between hitting and missing.

hmmm...left a bit on my mind...just because I got off with it doesn't mean I should forget about it.

I'm 'in waiting' at the moment.

I was in M1 motorway traffic a couple of weeks ago,all doing circa 80,and a flouro jacket appeared from the bushes. He'd heard the howl from the bike carbs and got all exited,ran to the front of the now-visible Omega to check my speed. I didnt brake,had cars behind me,so i just eased off the throttle to tone down the howl.

If i get a ticket,so should all the others.

Just read through some of the comments and i disagree with some of them,

It seems that quite a few have the impression that this tread is promoting speed and dangerous driving, i disagree. I would put a great deal of money down (if i had any) that 99.9% of the people that use this forum or any other car forum have done stupid things and made mistakes in their cars at some stage during their driving lifetime. Writing it down is only sharing a STORY (half of which are probably exagerated). Many will learn from the stories and reflect accordingly. I can agree, there will be the odd few, but what can you do?

Each time you get in your car to drive it, you are in a different situation or mood which is normally reflected in your driving style. Those who just drive like a spanner consistently are 'wrong' and also the most likely to cause hurt, those who drive like a plank and have a near miss (with half a brain) learn to respect that the roads are public and others use them. We have all been (or are) young and nieve at some stage and unfortuantely mistakes are made.

I have lost too many friends through several vehicle accidents and that wakes you up to the dangers of driving too fast for the given enviroment. Unfortunately the realism is that its the drivers choice to drive that way at that given time.

Those, that people should really think of are the innocent parties helpless at the hands of stupidity!

Wise words Jez and I totally agree with you but near enough everyone on here is addicted to speed and adrenaline in their dubs and we all let go every now again. Yes, some are just complete careless wankers that think it’s cool to drive like a cont but the majority of mature drivers take care and only speed responsibly and when it’s safe to do so [please don’t be pedantic people]

I’m first to admit get me on the motorway with my g40 now especially and I get lead foot and I can’t help myself cause it puts the biggest smile on my face but I only do so when quiet. I do behave myself anywhere else or when I do have the occasional play up it isn’t done recklessly and if I’m not comfortable or think it’s un safe on me, them being too much of a dick and any other driver on the reoad then I’ll pull back. Some drivers are just out there to be tw*ts. I also learnt my lesson that even when it’s quiet, a biffa truck can not be looking in your direction and pull out on you! That was enough for me to learn my lesson and not take it being quiet and what you think is safe as an OK to do so.

Vehicles that do over 70mph should not be allowed to be manufactured and sold to us if we’ve been given a restricted speed limit. It’s bullshit. The rule is there to be broken because it’s too easy, it’s a very good money maker. But it’s to make us feel like we’ve got a choice right

My parents,local pub,few friends houses are barely more than one mile away from me. I sit at 70mph for half the journey,on the occasions i dont walk it. The way cars move is on a completely different scale to the limits. And roads generally.

Course,its a bit different here in MK,as you'll travel along 60/70mph roads for the majority of any journey here,as it was built from scratch with the car in mind. But Dirt touched a point about the cars being built that are too fast for the roads and i couldnt agree more - They didnt used to be,our limits were a challenge for cars in the 60s but the things today are built for another planet.
