1992 VW Polo CL/GT/ABD

Featured Replies

Make: Volkswagen Polo - Indian Red

Model: CL - GT - ABD

Year/Reg: 1992

Mileage: 100,000

MOT: April 2010

Tax: October 2009

Engine: 1391cc ABD block, pistons, crank. Fully rebuilt 3F head with double valve springs, lapped in valves and new stem seals, 3F camshaft. The block had done roughly 80k when I removed it from the donor car. It had been regularly serviced and has no issues. Oil pressure is fine and there are no leaks at all. The cooling system is all new, including the radiator, thermostat and water pump. 2 speed cooling fan fitted, slow speed is automatic, fast speed is switchable from inside the car. EVERY sensor on the car has been replaced, bar the AFM which works fine. Correct GT inline fuel pump fitted, with reconditioned mounting plate and new fuel filter. I should also add that every seal and gasket replaced on the engine is genuine VW. They include - head gasket, inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets, camshaft seal, thermostat housing o-ring, cam cover gasket, sump gasket, and valve stem seals.

Gearbox: - AHD (GT) gearbox fitted, with new oil. No whines or nasty noises, crisp gearchange.

Exhaust: - Standard manifold and catalytic convertor downpipe. From the cat onwards is a 2" full stainless single box system with a downturned hidden 'TDi Style' tailpipe. Sounds very nice, not too noisy and not raspy either!

Suspension: PPP subframe, with lower wishbones and adjustable castor - correctly set up to 3.5º castor, parallel tracking. H&R Cup Kit, lowered 60/40mm. Brand new genuine VW front top mounts, reconditioned front struts with new genuine VW wheel bearings. Reconditioned G40/GT rear beam, fully painted, with new genuine VW axle bushes, new genuine VW wheel bearings and new genuine VW rear stub axles. New outer CV joints with new genuine VW gaitors. Reconditioned driveshafts fitted.

Brakes: Reconditioned VWII front calipers, CL type carriers (reconditioned). 239mm vented front discs, genuine VW discs and standard pads. New rear drums with reconditioned backplates, new linings, wheel cylinders, handbrake cables and adjusters. Brand new copper-nickel brake lines throughout, including the correct GT/G40 rear brake compensator. Goodridge stainless steel brake hoses front and rear. 22.2mm master cylinder. New Dot 5.1 brake fluid.

Wheels and Tyres: 13x5.5" GT steel wheels. Yokohama A539 175/60R13 tyres. Standard GT trims.

Exterior Styling: Genuine OE front foglights, including the correct VW labelled wiring loom. Clear front indicators and side repeaters. Late-spec tinted rear lights. Genuine Bosch amplified bee sting aerial fitted, sealed correctly to prevent leakage. GT trim kit (arches and sill trim). UK font, GB banded pressed steel number plates and 'Old VW's Never Die, They Just Get Faster' German plate surrounds. Black badges all round, GT grille badge. Brand new green tinted windscreen fitted, new genuine VW windscreen seal.

Interior Styling: Mint condition early style GT interior, with 50/50 split rear seats. Un-cut black parcel shelf. Full correct black GT headlining fitted. Dashboard removed and re-fitted correctly. GT clocks showing the correct mileage for the shell. Additional correctly illuminated heated rear window switch fitted to operate the cooling fan. Double thickness boot carpet and boot side carpets. Genuine VW tailored Mk3 mats. Correctly working headlight switch! Fully functioning heated rear screen.

Security: Mk2 Golf rear door handles fitted with Polo lock plungers, as well as armour door plates. Toad A201TC alarm and immobiliser fitted by me three weeks ago. Securely wired in to the cars loom, which I did by fully removing the dashboard to hide the wires correctly. The immobiliser immobilises both the starter solenoid circuit and fuel pump feed. It includes remote central locking, the wires to the solenoids have been run through proper gaitors from the A-Pillars into the doors - see pictures. The siren is hidden from immediate view if the bonnet is opened. Includes ultrasonic proximity sensors and passive re-arm, as well as auto locking the doors 10 seconds after the ignition is switched on (great anti-hijack feature!). Comes with full instructions and both keyfobs.

ICEBlaupunkt CD/MP3 head unit, Auxillary input for iPod etc, removable front. 10cm Alpine speakers in the standard position in the front dash, 6"x4" JBL GTO speakers in the standard position in the rear parcel shelf supports. Full ISO wiring and good quality speaker wiring throughout the car, correctly under the carpet so no wires on show anywhere. Incidentally, the wiring for the bee-sting aerial goes along the roof, and I fitted this before I fitted the headlining, so thats fully hidden from view too.

Comments: What can I say? This car has been a labour of love for me indirectly for the last 2 years. I've only owned this shell since february, which was when my black GT got written off in a rear end accident. The day of the accident I went out and bought this car, and have spent the last 5 months doing everything to it that I had planned for the black GT, basically converting it from a standard 1043cc CL to the car you see now.

I can't emphasise enough how much time and effort has gone into this car! I've literally spent 2 years hunting round to get the best possible parts, doing research, reading up on things, mooching through scrapyards, cleaning, painting and building until I finally got to the finished article about 3 weeks ago, once I'd fitted the alarm, central locking, headlining and new windscreen. I'm almost 100% sure you will not find another car thats been finished mechanically to this extent, where almost everything is either brand new or has had some sort of reconditioning done. I'm 100% confident it will go through many more MOT's without any problems at all.

I was really lucky with this shell, in that there's no rust anywhere. It isn't without its faults however. If I was going to keep the car the one thing I would do would be to get it re-sprayed. It has a few bits of lacquer peel on the roof, which were completely my fault - I taped the roof up to prevent the drill slipping when I drilled the hole for the bee-sting, left the tape on overnight and then was a bit over-zealous when peeling it off! Lesson learned. There are a small amount of car park dings down the character lines on both sides which are annoying, as well as some stone chips on the bonnet but they could easily be sorted out if the car was to be sprayed. However, that doesn't mean to say it doesn't look good! I spent a whole day treating it to a good clay and several layers of Super Resin Polish and it looked amazing, its just when you get a bit closer you notice the odd bit here and there. But I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

Please see the build thread for the car here - BUILD THREAD

Good points:Too much to say! A whole box-file full of history and receipts for this vehicle. Its great to drive, it returns a minimum of 39mpg from every tank (I'm sad and work it out every time!). It recorded a 9.9 sec 0-60 time at Inters this year, although god knows if thats accurate or not! Its pretty quick, and obviously handles extremely well with the subframe correctly set-up. Please read into my above description for an accurate rundown of its good points :)

Bad points: As above - the lacquer peel and small number of dents. A re-spray would literally make it perfect in my opinion!

Reason For Sale: No longer needed as the owner wants an Audi Coupe!

Hey everyone, this car is now BACK UP FOR SALE at a lower price :)

I sold this to a friend who has ran it for the last year as his daily driver. He now wants to upgrade to an Audi Coupe so therefore has no further use for the Polo.

It has done 8000 completely trouble free miles since I built it (apart from a brake light bulb!), and went straight through the last MOT with no problems at all. The car is now approaching 100k miles and the engine is perfect with no oil usage at all.

It will be at GTi International next weekend so anyone who wants to view is welcome to. I'm advertising it on behalf of my friend, if you're interested then please PM me and I'll give you his details.

Thanks for reading!

Tom

On eBay now at £820 with a day and a bit to go!!!

Hello all (especially Tom) I AM THE NEW OWNER OF THIS BEAUTY!!!!! (woot wooooooooooot)

I have had a 1ltr CL for almost a year, which is my second polo after a mk2 bready I had ages ago.

My current polo is a fine example, but just too slow. I didn't mind at first but after driving my GF's Audi TT

for a while it gets frustrating, although the polo is a lot more fun : )

Anyway, I won the auction, £1071 or something like that, was well chuffed, sorry if I outbid any of you guys on hear

but there was no way it wasn't going to be mine! I love it already and aint even seen it yet. Getting money together

this week and plan to go get her from Steven on Saturday.

Can I ask a question about the car? The build thread mentions that it hadn't gone to Dan yet (was it dan?)

for a remap. Did this ever happen, or did it ever get a chip etc etc? Just wondering as if not I will start looking into it.

I'm from Darlington, Co Durham. Pretty sure this will be the best polo around here. I would say mine is at the moment

for looks (see the odd pensioner driving a GT and they don't even know what they have!)

Hopefully more people here will learn to love them!

Hey,

Sorry for taking to ages to reply, this thread wouldn't open for me for about 4 days!

Well done on winning the auction, you really have got an awesome car with an amazing spec for only a couple of hundred quid more than standard GT money! The subframe is only just a year old and cost £515

Anyway, it never went for a remap but to be honest I don't think it really needs it! You probably wouldn't see much in the way of a benefit (compared to the cost), and I'm not sure if a chip would do much good either. The ABD lump delivers its torque at fairly low RPM so there's no need really to rev it beyond about 6k as I reckon peak power is produced at that point. Revving it higher won't give you much benefit and its not proven how strong the ABD bottom end is compared to the 3F when it comes to pushing 8k as you can with some of the chips out there.

I really hope you like it, and enjoy it, you've seen how much work went into it :)

Tom

well gutted i missed this one
