Ok so - my polo had its MOT pre-test, the garage told me everything passed apart from the front bearings had gone... so i told them to do the repairs.

but later on they called me to say when they started taking it apart they realised it wasn't the bearings - it was just a loose nut on the driveshaft... so it passed, great - but they want to charge me £120 for the labour, is that fair or can i argue that there was nothing wrong with the bearings anyway??

well , they still took the time to take it apart/ tighten a bolt lol - they usually charge 40 odd quidd an hour??

if the test cost £42 then they're charging me £78 in labour, is that reasonable - i dont know how long it would take to do what they did?

They should've spotted the loose driveshaft nut after they took the wheels off, possibly the brakes, but I doubt it. You can see and adjust the nut with the wheel still on. £78 seems extortionate, should be half that at most.

yea i was expecting a charge for about an hour's labour, i appreciate that they had to take it apart to see but an hour at most?? not two? not that i've done it myself but am i right?

query the bill with the garage owner and ask why the bill is so high

at the end of the day it was their mistake

they could have just told you they had changed the bearing and charged you anyway

sounds like a reasonably reputable place to have not done that to you

but it does sound like a big bill to tighten a nut

Hmm its a tough one, i don't want to go round and be a dick - but i cant actually afford to pay so much for a loose nut

Depends, an hour for a mechanic and assistant to pre-test, then an hour to whip the wheels off, realise the fault and tighten the drive shaft nuts. Ain't far out for a mainstream garage to be honest.

I can see your point yeti, but a mis-diagnosis isn't her fault, its the garages at the end of the day. If it took him longer than it should to tighten a driveshaft bolt, then i don't see why she should pay £80 for it! Jenny if you have trouble with them let me or rich know and we will be more than happy to make a call for you to sort it out!

Girls going to garages is a bad choice. Unless you flash them a bit of ankle and get some dollar knocked off.

Otherwise they just tear your knickers down.

I duno - maybe it's a fair price? they did do the handbrake aswell ( i know i told them not too but at least it saved skatty a job )

You are a girl and they took advantage and did jobs that you didn't even ask for. Don't go back there. Next time wear some jeans and hang a sausage out the fly when you walk in. Trouser snake discount at most garages.

Where was this garage at? Its not a ridiculous price but its about £30 on the high side.

I dont want to play the 'girl' card but they do try and rip us off. Until i make them stutter when they find out i know more

about cars and MY car than they do. Kwikfit are a prime example!

Few years back while having a back box done, the fitter came into the customer area and told me " we do this customer car check, and we have found there's 4mm play in the top mount we advise you to have new shocks", i replied Mr Volkswagen installed the 4mm of play for a very good reason, now shoot off and finish my exhaust and stop playing around with my bonnet in case you trap your fingers.

A very common ploy by them to have extra work carried out..i don't use them as a rule..but my local exhaust center was 2 hours waiting and i had to be somewhere.
