6N 8v to 6N2 gti conversion.

Featured Replies

right need some backgroud info for a mate who doesn't use this forum about this conversion. I'm aware that dubbprince (i think his username was) did it on his valver but i'm not so sure if anyones swapped an 8v yet! sooooooo we're aware that we need:

*engine

*loom

*gearbox (possibly going to use the afh box though)

*clocks, ecu and ignition barrel

*16v mounts (theres one that needs changing and think it may be the gearbox mount?)

*we're going to swap the subframe to a 16v set up with the arb's from a gti and therfore make it easier for a g60 brake swap.

*more than likely we'll do a 6n2 dash swap to make the interior loom wiring easier.

*already have gti rear discs

so baisically is that is covered or is there anything else we need/ should look out for when doing the swap?

cheers for any help in advance.

my car was an 8v

dont need to change the sub frame.

the motor mount that will need a change is not the tranny mount, but the one on the passenger side.

will cost about 70 euros for it, from vw

I'm jealous, i want rear disks!

if you need help, PM me on this. this was an ordeal for me, hit every problem imaginable so...

also, how much of the exhast do you have?

the downpipe is 1100 euros from VW and you cant get it anywhere else.

i had one made for me, using my old cat from my 8v, after widening it a bit.

good luck!

ahhh good to know someone else has done it! if we can't source a downpipe we'll be able to get one made up as its more than likely to be having a full stainless custom exhaust built once its all done. what were some of the problems you came across?

..well mine was an extreme case i suppose.

i got:

6n2 gti (ARC) motor:5000km on it

exhaust manifold (no 02 sensors)

gearbox.

ECU

interior wiring loom.

clocks.

no key.

no radiator.

so:

no engine loom (had to wire it by hand, all 121 wires :puke: )

no downpipe/cat. converter.(had to get one made)

If you do not have the key to that engine, there will be a problem too, as it uses the radio signal to disable the Immo.

(pretty cool system, actually... the engine will run, with the wrong key, but will put out like..1 hp)

I still have the 8v radiator, which works fine, temp stays dead in the middle,

and the ARC motor comes with an oil cooler, allthough i have some air ducts blowing on the filter/housing to help it along.

if youd like pics of it in the bay, lemme know:)

I decided to keep the mk4 interior since the whole project was an assload of money, so i used the mk4 clocks instead.

You will probably need a bigger fuel pump as well, since the 8v one isnt enough to provide fuel up to 7000rpm

( i still have the 8v one though, and isnt really a problem.)

ummmmm

I have a few parts left over from the swap:

(GTI airco compressor, ABS computer)

where did you get your engine from, and how much?

i spent 2.500 euros on mine and another 1200 euros on the installation part

:) its very very fucking worth it though... you will not be dissapointed, and in a car as good looking as yours, it will be a great allrounder.

i use my car for the track with this motor, and it still pulls hard all day, despite having the original 6n radiator.

what year is the 8v?

if you can source a gti fan would ease the wiring and a dash swap with full loom would be adviseable, headlight plugs would need swapping too.

possibly repeaters depending on the year of the 8v.

for the dash swap apparently you have to mod the brackets. dubbprince is the man in the know.

the rear discs are coming from me as i sourced a gti rear beam a while back and never used it and radiator isn't a problem as i have a spare 16v one sat in the garage. the gti lumps not for my car as i'm selling it! we don't actually have all the bits yet but have a mate whos dad gets on very well with someone in the car breaking business so shouldn't be a massive problem. fan/assembly and all the other niggly bits won't be a problem as we're going to baisically get a rear/side impact gti and take it to bits for all the parts we need.

as for what year its either 97/98 on a R plate but i'm not exactly sure. i'm guessing you're asking that due to the fact all the wiring on the earlier spec 6N's is different?

phil... sanj didnt buy the p reg 16v engine i had as it didnt marry up to the later spec car he intended on fitting it into, something to do with the fusebox and wiring in the later models is the same as the 6n2

Is this conversion actually worth all the hassle etc??

Whats peoples opinions??

I reckon a lightly tuned AFH would make more sense and be considerably cheaper!

What's the engine code for the 6n GTI?

I wonder if any parts from that would make the swap easier?

hmm never really thought about this conversion.

Any other tips or advise??

haha ;);)

hi, new to using forums. i was wondering if anybody knows what looms are needed for this conversion. i have the engine loom however no interior loom. i messaged a seller on ebay who claimed the loom from the ecu through the firewall is a separate piece from the interior wiring on a gti. Is this true? or do i just need to purchase an interior loom from a gti and it will be all i need? thank you in advance
