I know that cars built in late 1992 have to have a working Cat, my car is Jan 1992 and i have my MOT coming up and was wondering...

If the car is fitted with a catalyst does it have to be in full working order for the mot? or will the tester just ignore it?

If it fails and he ignores it then i will de-cat it, but I'm worried that he may not ignore it, but if i de cat it and get it retested then he cant do anything as it doesnt need to have a Cat?

Not as such, the presence of a cat isn't tested, however, the emissions level will still be set for a catalysed vehicle.

That said, with GT's being MPI, they do run pretty clean when running right, so you should be able to get away with it if your car's healthy.

I checked the emissions of my Camry (100,000 mile 2.5 litre non-catalysed car) against what a catalysed 1.3 Polo was allowed on the emissions, and it would have pissed it.

So chances are it may still be tested, despite the fact that it does not officially need to have one?

cars after aug1992 (when k plates came out) have to do a cat test so yours shouldn't do one. They don't test for the presence of a cat, it just has to do a stricter emissions test which will be difficult to pass without a cat (but not impossible).
