Update 23-07-08 part 2

We have now sanded with 400 grit, partially wet partially dry.

Next step is to sand with 800...then hopefully get the acid etch primer on.

Yeh no point rushing, these things take time. Only thing I am worried about is how long this good weather is going to last..

Even after I get the primer on I still do not know what colour to paint them, all I know is I want a pearl effect, something like graphite pearl would be just fine. Not too dark to look balck, but not too light to look silver...where would I purchase paint from? The local places are not that helpful, the are really expensive compared to halfords and other car shops such a Oscott (Fletchers).

I have sanded all the wheels with 1200 and then rinsed them before I took the pictures:

The colour I have chosen is either Graphite Grey Metallic or Anthracite Grey Pearl, now just got to find out where to get them from.

Update 25-07-08 Part 1

We have just sprayed the wheels with U-Pol Acid Etch primer, for some reason it was not spraying out correctly, I do not know why but we got there in the end.

Next step, primer x 3 coats

Looking good but i dont know if i would go to that much effort for a set of multispokes!

Udpate 25-07-08 Part 2

1 coat of primer

just a quick tip but it might be a bit late but anyway.

get you are new rubber fitted be for u paint them and ask them to break the bead after they test that the tyre is not leaking. then mask the tyre, paint the wheels and then that way you are fresh paint wont get chiped when u have the tyres fitted. all you have to do then is put the air back in and tyre will seal its self

Been a bit busy but here are the latest update, we have finished everything, just need some tyres now!

A few things to reflect on:

Do not sand with a low grit where it is not needed, we made this mistake and now have scratches in places that were perfect!

Try to sand with the highest grit possible, will make the job a lot easier finish wise.

If you are a first time refurber, pick some easier wheels, I do not think they get much ahrder than multispokes!

fair play to you mate, iv done wheel refurbs before but they have never been that bad to start with so has been fairly easy. you ust have some patience, they look really smart, get some pics up when they are on your car.

i also started to mirror polish some p-slots, got 2 finished and tyred then give up.

i get bored easily and leave things for 2-3 weeks before i can be bothered again but this thread has really inspired me again.

EDIT: how much did the acid etch primer cost if you dont mind me asking

Nice one..oooh polished! It is a good project I feel, another way to customise your ride and something to feel proud of!

U-Pol Acid Etch Primer - £11.49 from Halfords..too much so did one coat per wheel and now have half the can left :-)

Any ideas on the centre caps?

i think the centres look ok, the little vw badges will look pretty smart it reckon
