my mate soupe_s has my old car its a mk3 coupe it has been lowered on 40mm springs and standard dampers.

it has now started making a knocking noise when turnign left over a bump. as you can see the top mounts do not sit flush on the chassis

is the solution shorter dampers or winding down the bolt further although it seems wound down?

any help appreciated?

top mounts looked fucked...did you put new ones on?

no the top mounts werent replaced. thats what i thought the problem was. so to fix it is it a spring and damper set + top mounts or just the top mounts?

Just came in from fitting Philj suspension, and have exactly the same problem, help would be appreciated! I'm sure it cant be the top mounts because mine are in fine condition and exactly how i took them off the old suspension. Could it be the rubber underneath?

Got exactly the same problem with my ta technix coilovers on my mk4 fitted them last week, you can hear a clunking noise when driving from both sides, doesn't look as bad as those ones but they are still slighty loose, What are the difference between new ones and the old ones, surely if you needed new ones, it would have done the same thing when the old suspension was on with the old top mounts. Plus they look ok

had the same problem. mine are fine now as i used all the old part off the original springs, didnt use the silver cone at top of front coilies just used all the old parts and it seems to be very snug.

seems like a reccourign problem. i have talked to a few guys and they say it may not be the topmount if the car is jacked up and you lift the wheel and move it around. when looking at the top mount if theres play then the top mount has gone if not then thats not the problem.

I have noticed the ta technix coilovers i put in my vario being a bit noisey, like a rattle when you hit a bump sometimes, i think it is the plate that separates the main spring and helper spring or something i dont know, when i am jacking the car up and the coilies are decompressing you can hear it "scraping" up.

i had the car jacked up and wheels off and basically swung aroung on every component there is and they are all fine and tight so i guess the coilies are just noisey?

my top mounts dont look like that btw, surely if your only down 40mm on springs that shouldnt happen?

Mk3 top mounts do tend not to sit flush, but those don't look right (they look like mine do on my G40 and I know for a fact that they need replacing - they are knocking over bumps at full lock when turning right and there is a hell of a lot of play in them). He was also knocking when on full lock when I turned left and that was because the outer CV joint was completely fucked, so it might be worth checking your CV joints also.

It's probably a warn top mount bush causing that.

I have this problem too after just fitting my philj kit to the front. Had a discussion on polo3 and seems like most peoples are like this. My top mounts looked fine, and I'm pretty sure it sat like this on the stock shocks and springs too.

I also have a knocking, but the trackings not been done yet...

If mines still making a noise after the tracking, and someone finds the solution, I'm all ears lol.

when you say they 'looked fine' do you mean you checked them for play and play was not excessive? or just they looked fine??? as knackered ones do look just the same as new ones - the difference is play in the bearing

Either way the car sat sits like this, and i dont think changing the top mounts will change that - as everyone elses seems to sit like this unless they put camber adjusters on.

But i may be wrong. In which case, if someone has changed the top mounts and its fixed the problem then i'll do that!

Yes the top mounts, don't get them from GSF though. Better off getting them from VW if there not too pricey

I think you have included something from the old suspension which is not needed. I did the same with my suspension. I will try and dig the thread out for your guys... :)

yep mine are like that its normal. depends on the kit. i've done 40k with them like that with no problems on an H&R cup kit.. i've seen tons of mk3's like this.just put the caps back on the top if the look of it bothers you.

what damage does it cause by having this gap? Other than it jumping up and down over big bumps?

because in my experience the height differs depending on the set up used. in both my coupes that i have owned in the last 6 years they have both at some point had this...my g40 is like that now..its not a problem.

I dont think its dangerous as such, most mk3's i have seen are the same but the gap did go on mine when i replaced them, i just looked on an old receipt and the ones i got are down as polo top mounts modified. So i dont know if this means there stronger or different in size as i did tell him it was lowered 60mm
