Suprise! Gearbox gone in 6n2 GTI

Featured Replies

I guess it was inevitable. The gearbox went the other week. Need to source a replacement (gonna sort the clutch too) and wondered what the best option was? Hoping to stay clear of VW dealerships due to cost. My plan at the moment is to track down a suitable gearbox and get it over to a mechanic I know. This sound wise?

Anyone know anywhere that's likely to have a suitable gearbox. Only tried one place local so far, no luck.

Thanks for any help.

GIVE THESE GUYS A CALL AT BLACK DIAMOND BASED IN WARRINGTON, 01925 416 619 GEARBOX AND AXLE SPECIALIST!!!

I saw a recon one on ebay but they do want quite a bit for it.

yeah recon ones on e gay are about 400-500.....any gearbox or clutch specialist will sort oyu out, like i said give black diamond a call

Cheers for the contact number. I gave them a buzz and can get the part and delivery for around £380. They don't do a warranty on the part other than failure on install, which is a little surprising.

In the meantime, my mechanics nipped off to Skeggy! Any recommended mechanics in the Mansfield/Notts area??

Be very wary when buying a recon gearbox. These gearboxes are about as much good as a chocolate tea pot and some could be on their second "recon". Personally, I'd try and get your own gearbox repaired. At least you know the age and history of what you have as opposed to another box which might have been much worse than your own one.

A properly reconditioned gearbox will be very expensive. You need to know exactly what the company have done to "recon" the box. Many will have had very little work done at all, just a quick clean up and a bearing or 2 replaced. Only buy from a place that offers at least a full 6 months minimum warranty, peferably 12 months.

Black Diamond obviously ain't much use if they can't offer any warranty on the gearbox itself.

They cant guarantee it because it could be fitted incorrectly or something could be wrong on the engine side of things causing the geabrox to go again when the gearbox wasnt at fault

I also have a 2001 Polo GTI and i think my box is going aswell. What hapened when your box went?

Mine has started to make a 'whining' noise in first and second gear that increases as you get faster although once I've hit 25mph+ it goes. When the car is in neutral and you push the clutch pedal to the floor the noise also goes and comes back as you bring the clutch up. The weird thing is that gear changes are still smooth, theres no crunching etc and the car still pulls wel when you put your foot down????!!!! Could it be soething else?

The annoying thing is that I'm planning to get shot of the car after my wedding in october and dont really want the expense of a new box. Someone suggested to me about chucking in a gearbox oil additive to mask the whining noise and help me get to october so i can trade the bastard in to a local (but massive car sales garage) and let them deal with a new box. Is this possible?

Any ideas, suggestions would be very welcomed!!!

Thanks for the advice. I'm having the gearbox rebuilt and a new clutch. Still, not cheap.

quilaboo: Mine kinda went over night. You'll know when its gone from the horrible grinding and whining noise. And then I could'nt find 4th gear.

However in the run up to it going it was quite subtle. For the last few months I could hear a very faint (rough friction) grinding sort of noise when driving slow in low gear. I'm sorry to say that it sounds like your experience, when the clutch was in it stopped. I suspect you can't hear it over 25 mph due to other noises masking it. The clutch has always been stiff, but - like you - I never had a problem finding gear. If your keeping it, take is steady until you hitched.

How often did you check your gearbox oil?

what happened? i approachaed a round about, clutch in, changed gear, clutch out and heard a horrible crunch noise with losts of mangling squeaking groaning noises and everyone in the street was looking. if this happens just dump your clutch straight away and roll to the safest point if possible....

and your having exactly the same noises as i had.....you can either wait to see what happens, or get it in straight away before it does more damage like mine did by cracking the casing :-S

just go and check it out as long as your car can be driven, or else you'll end up stopping on a side and call a tow truck one day or another.

My car is still getting fixed. Waiting on gear parts to be delivered from overseas (Germany I presume). The ETA is 22nd of August!!!

Anyone know anywhere that could deliver a decent part sooner?

I miss my car :-(

Once again, thanks for any help.

all parts are avallible from vw next day. you will only have to wait for pinion shaft from vw germany

i also have a 2001 polo gti had it for about a month now. the problem has only just started its fine when i drive it from cold in the morning but when i start using it on and off the clutch going through the gears then it starts to get hard going into gear. when i stop at lights and go to select first it takes about 3 attempts before going in. I'm going to check the gearbox oil level 2moz and see what happends from their, but could anyone help me out and tell me what my problem could be?
