Right, I've had loads and loads of interest in my Escort since I put it in the paper on Saturday. It's a year 2000 1.8 TDI Finesse, ew, cl, aircon etc, fully loaded as far as Escorts go but its got a nice scrape down the front bumper and front wing.

The passengers side track rod end is literally hanging out... it's fucked...

Just about 20 minutes ago had a Polish bloke come round, look round the car, start it, but he refused to take it for a test drive, said "if you say ok, it's ok"

I said it was OK and there is a little knock coming from one of the wheels (knowing full well what it was but really didn't fancy describing to him, he was having a hard enough time understanding my English accent when he's probably used to people with broad North east Scotland accents haha

So, he asked what my best price is, I said I'm not really open to offers, so he gave me the asking price (£700) right there and then and said he'd come and pick the car up on Sunday.

I can't believe it's possible to get people so trusting these days and I DO feel guilty about the fact that TRE is knackered.

So, should I sort the track rod end out, or not? I think I will.

Also, note the car has just covered 430 miles in 2 days, most of which exceeding the speed limit on the obviously private road by considerable extent, so it certainly wasn't clean. Bug splatters everywhere!

At the end of the day, 1) how muuch is it going to cost to fix... and

2) surley, if the guy thinks its a problem then hes just going to take it to a garage and be a little annoyed. Id be surprised if he comes back and wants his money back!

id sort it mate, becuase id feel bad. he can see the scrape so it obviously doesnt phase him.

i sold a set of wheels to a polish bloke, he didnt haggle or anything. that was last summer.

my sister was breaking bits from her written off mk3, advertised on ebay and the same lad came round... again literally gave us the money before he even saw the goods!

@ toby, could you not get hold of a track rod end and give it to him and say that may need fitting at one point?

my guess is he'll run his wife and 6 kids around with no tax, insurance or mot anyway, track rod end is nowt to worry about.

I think I will sort it out, the part is £16 as I actually need the whole rod for some reason, fit it one evening and get it tracked in my lunch hour!

it's not illegal to sell a car in any condition, how else do people sell restoration projects? There are very few laws regarding private sales, it's sold as seen. Maybe it'll teach him to look at a car more closely before handing over the wedge. Anyway, it's a track rod end it'll prob cost about £4 for a new one for one of those escorts.

I was referring to selling a car as roadworthy when its not. But you do seem to be right, there are laws for traders who sell cars as roadworth when they are not but not for private sellers.

Yeah I know what you mean but it's up to the seller to check such things in a private sale. If something did happen I don't think the buyer would have any grounds to take Toby to court over it. Although the fact he's admitting to it on internet forums wont be doing him any favours on that front

It's illegal to sell a car in unroadworthy condition even if it's a private sale. The buyer doesn't have any comeback in a private sale unless you have deliberately misrepresented it, but you can still be prosecuted and fined. If you make it clear it's sold as unroadworthy (like a restoration project) or it doesn't have an MOT that's OK. Tell the bloke the car's a death trap and then you're covered.
