My moneys on the punto to fall apart first...closely followed by the mk4 haha

The Punto will murder the Polo's.

A 1.6 8V Polo, racing, bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

whats wrong with a 1.6 8 v racing? polo wont fall apart lol

0-60 take the best part of a day.

doesnt mate there quicker 0-60 then 16v

Erm? No they're not?

Not according to Parkers Guide they're not.

1.4 16V Polo. 100bhp. 0-60mph 10.2 seconds. Top speed 117mph.

1.6 8V Polo. 75bhp. 0-60mph 11.8 seconds and 14.0 seconds. Top speed 107mph and 104mph.

And for the 90's Punto:

Notice how the 1.2 8V Punto is quicker than the 1.6 Polo?

The punto GT does 0-60 in 7.6 seconds, top speed of 124mph. Thats the G40/G60 territory.

Those Punto Turbos are quick.

I was having a play about with one once, was me and the missus in the car and the Punto was 5s up and at every speed he was just picking up and saying bye bye to me.

Thats in 1.4 16v 100BHP Lupo.

I dunno why people won't just face that fact that Volkswagen don't make the quickest cars out there. In comparison other manufacturers make much quicker cars. Seems like people on here have something to prove about Volkswagens because they own one. Above anything its just sad imo, there are better cars out there worth looking at outside Volkswagens but nearly everyone has blinkers that don't allow them to see it.

doesnt mate there quicker 0-60 then 16v

can we dwell on this fact a little longer?

please justify this statement, I'm intreeged, 8v, is quicker than 16v, all them extra valves just add to the weight restrictions hey...

0-60 take the best part of a day.

i had a 9 second 0-62 from my old engine, being a 1.6 8v.

i find the 8v sounds better than the 16v gti motor, by the way

doesnt mate there quicker 0-60 then 16v

bahahahahaahahahhaahahahaaaahhahahahaaha

punto will rape a 1.6 8v and just out run the 1.4 16v, but then again the punto will fall apart at the end

Mk4 Polo's =

A Punto GT did a good job of sticking with a friends old G40, looked 'ard as nails too in black with the center exit exhausts.

"I had a 9 second 0-62 from my old engine, being a 1.6 8v"

My point proven, book times are bollocks, I've played with a punto gt and it only started to pull away about 70. i agree vw arent the quickest cars out there but their the most reliable and best looking in my opinion.

1.6 8v are very underatted on the forum dont see why though.

aggreed! after third gear though.... its a bit of a waiting game, but i was pleasantly surprised by that car.

i come from the land of where 2.0 16v=slow..

i immidiately wrote of a 1.6 8v off as a shit car,

then i drove it and was very surprised at how punchy it was

but yea, not the fastest but its a good little car:)

Lawl

Having said this... there is something to be said AGAINST the modern obscession with BHP being the only thing that matters

the newer cars all seem to have much higher BHP.. but due to there power delivery being all Revs actually makes them quite frustrating to drive.

Ask any motorcyclist (who isnt a 1000 junkie) and they will tell you for road bikes all the leading manufacturers have been barking up the wrong tree for the last 5 years, and that the worst thing that happened to the HONDA VFR was the introduction of VTEC. They make incredible figures on paper, and are iawesome for the track, but its not all about having it up the revs all the time.

Just my thoughts !

WHAT have i done starting that lupo v saxo thread i really wish i hadnt posted it now

thank you rindiesel. i think even after third gear its still pretty quick, not sure if it was a standard one you drove but mine would easily do 0-60 in around 8 -8.5 seconds, got great pickup from 2000rpm onwards 16v takes long to get a decent powerband.

Punto GT would win all day long...until it fell apart.

Yeah, we're talking about MPH not KPH.

Jokes asside, please tell us what you have done to this car to achieve a 0-60mph time of between 8 and 8.5 seconds.

stop bullshitting you wont get 0-60MPH in 8secs out of a 1.6 8v

The chances of you racing a standard GT are slim aswell, most have a lot of engine mods, some are running stupid quick power.

Also for the one you did have a play around with I'm sure he wasn't trying or something was fucked on his car because no way in hell your Polo's on par with a Punto GT.

God, not another thread about 0-60 and racing.

Please, accept certain truths:

VW do not make the fastest cars. Please, get over it, or get your wallet out for modifications if you're really that bothered.

Anecdotal stories about "well I caned a Ferrari in my 1043cc polo so they must be nippy", "I kept up with him so my overweight, leisurely 8v polo must be faster than the book figures" are exactly that - anecdotal. Drag strip times are heavily dependant on lots of other variables - including the driver. Book figures are also fairly conservative, and lots of reasons might show why you've posted a faster time, or got a higher BHP on the rolling road.

If you bought your VW for speed, you're an idiot. VWs are renown for reliability, build quality and strength in an accident. I'm not going to go into whether this is deserved, but it is a reputation that has stuck from years of car building. I bought a polo because my golf never broke down. Ever. Ask the AA if you don't believe me.

Yes, Punto turbos are quick (forced induction vs N/A? No contest) and Saxos have a quicker 0-60 (2nd gear was deliberately made tall to fix this result) but they will all rust away and fall apart. How many Uno Turbos are still on the roads? Bloody quick cars, but most haven't lasted. But, how many mk2 polos? No contest - but you'll never set the pod on fire in a standard mk2 polo.

You can make most cars fast with enough cash (look at the brown datsun with a 200sx engine in on ebay at the moment) but please, roadracing fanboys, please, give it a rest.

Se what you've done to me? I'm turning into Keith.

i agree vw arent the quickest cars out there but their the most reliable and best looking in my opinion.

just out of interest how many vw's have you owned mate?
