Filter placement 6N 1.4 8V

Featured Replies

Hey

appologies if this has been asked before..

but i had an idea for a filter placement.. would this work?

hope whoeveres car this is doesnt mind...

Could i not simple remove the section shown in red and replace with a generic Cone filter? using the standard air box and removing the filter inside?

One question tho... the air feed to the manifold (in blue), what would be best to do with this? I'm sure I've seen people that have just removed this and removed the manifold cover????

One more question now i think of it...

does anyone else get lots of verdegree on the battery terminal under the cover (the blue cruddy corrosive stuff)... cos i have cleaned it off a few times now but it seems to build up again quite quickly

Doesn't the standard filter make a seal between the bottom and top of the airbox, so to stop unfiltered air getting into the engine?

  • Author

Yeh i think it does... but isnt the only inlet to that whole encloure the place where I'm proposing to put the new filter (in place of the removed Red Section?

Maybe your right? and I'm actually having a really thick moment lol???

anyone ?

Anyone???

I was thinking this might be quite a good way to do it... espec as the filter would be right next to the cold air feed from the front arch???

am i missing something? is there another inlet to the standard airbox that would then be unfiltered?

also the Rubber hose underneath that goes in to the airbox would this now be a problem???

just do what i did mate buy a dnx panel filter off ebay bwt 9 quid and take a direct cold air feed to the air box ill put a pic up asap

as gharbud says ! i fitted a k&n panel filter then just after the hot air valve connect a pipe that goes down to a bass port tube from mapplins that is fitted into the front radiator cowel ! one good thing with this way is your eng heats up as it should and when warm gets lots of cold air rammed in and to supplement that mod fit the gt cam ! a little technical but well worth it i aint road tested my cam yet after fitting it but i know from the sound of the eng its going to be good couple them mods with a 4 branch decat and s/s system and you have just about maxed out the potential budget tunning options unless you got loads of bucks !!

the red box is where i have my air filter just as u said its ryt next to the cold air feed but the tube off the manifold I've folded down so the hot air from the manifold doesnt blow to the filter

  • Author

Isnt that tube to the manifold there to feed cool air over the manifold to stop it getting too hot though?

and Have u placed the filter over the end of the standard airbox??

what about what this guy was saying about the old filter making a seal between top and bottom???? I'm pretty sure that wont matter as if theres a filter at the end of the airbox theres no other entry is there?

This bit???

as far as I'm aware there is no other inlet to the standard airbox than where we are talking about....so by blocking this with a cone filter... surely thats problem solved???

good idea about the K&N... but I'm just curious whether this would also work? and sound a bit better?

Anyone confirm?>

TBH, wouldn't a bit of hose securly clamped onto the throttle body with a cone filter the other end just be a nice looking and easy thing to do?

yes you can do what your saying, i have done it and it has worked. i did it on my old mk4 back in the day, you get rid of the "blue" feed and exhaust sheild

ill try and find some pics

not my actual car, but some one else who has done this......i removed the sheild not just the hot air feed in the pic

Ahhha

cheers for the reply

what was it like? sound any good?

no problems with removing the manifold cover ? overheating ?

Also ...

you say hot air feed... surely thats a cold air feed to cool the manifold?

why would you want hot air feeding in to the airbox?

Hot air is fed into the air intake when outside temp is low to help warm the engine up

  • Author

Does it shut off the hot air feed when its up to temp then? if so how lol?

isnt it just a plastic pipe?

Not being funny i just dont get it...

:ninja: no one knows :ninja:
  • Author

Lol... apparently not

  • Author

Somone must know...

whats the deal lol

ok the reasons why it isnt great.

putting a cone onto that bit of plastic pipe doesnt improve owt because a - the plastic pipe is thinner than the k+n's bore so there is only a certain amount of air that can pass threw that pipe.. hence why k + n's have a wider pipe to allow more air.

also its still letting the oil brether into the intake which decreases performance by 0.2%

and no doubt your fitting a k and n because you want the "badboy noize" well going on that will sound practically the same.

rip off the box and fit the k and n straight to the throttle body if you dont believe me it will be about 2x louder.

then the best way after that will be getting some good cold air feeds to it.

ps that sensor your on about is to let hot air into the system on a cold start to ease it in.

i wouldnt worry to much about not using this just go gentle on your foot for 5minutes like you should be anyway.

also with the kone fitted above^ if it was me doing that (which i wouldnt as its pointless) but id get a heat sheild nearer the kone to help reflect all that heat

Sensor... who mentioned anything about a sensor.... are you talking about a sensor that determines whether to let hot air from the manifold in to the airbox... because that would be what i was asking.

The reason i wanted to do it this way is mainly cos

a) it looks shit taking all the airbox off and just having a filter there.

b) there is already a cold air feed right next to where I'm proposing to put it

c) i know that all "Induction kits" do absolutely fuck all in reality... and just liked the sound and the ability to have a cotten cleanable filter

So what your saying about the sensor... is that what the little brass jobbie is under the manifold? surely then you could just leave the pipe connected and point it at the side of the filter?.... and if need be it will blow warm air on to the filter creating the same effect as before?

Where the "red" & "blue" pipes meet there is a flap inside on a spring.
