Hi there, joined a few weeks back after i picked up a 6N 1.9d for cheap moneys, came in as an MOT failure, fixed it up and started using it for everyday as its more economical than the jap crap lol.

when i first got it, 111000miles, needin a bit of TLC

fixed the bumper up, cleaned it up and painted the grille and wheels matt black

these were advertised on here local, not my ideal choice of wheel but better than matt black steelies for now

fitted with some clear front indicators

been off today... so went in work :S and got very busy, (un planned lol)

started by stripping, repairing and prepping my 16v bumpers i bought off jondog on here over the weekend

then whilst waiting for them to dry....

Removed the POLO and 1.9DL badges, painted the VW badge matt black, removed the rear wiper and made a blank for it

then i got a bit carried away, headlights out, stripped and smoked, 16v bumpers on

just need some new plates now and keep my eyes out for some coilovers.

ran my vento TD on it and did so for 25000miles it never missed a beat, as long as u wash it through with diesel every so often and run a mix in winter its not a problem on the VW engines :)

Why would that happen? The vw diesels use the bosch pump which is pretty much fine for using veg oil. The Lucas etc pumps sieze when running unheated veg oil so you may have heard about people siezing their pump on peugeots or fords etc, but that isnt a problem on the bosch. I find that most people on forums who know nothing about the subject always say your engine will sieze but the ones who actually know, know that its fine to run on veg oil.

I have been running my variant on 50/50 mix of diesel and cooking oil since i got it, in winter i would only run 20/80. 90% veg oil sounds a bit high to me? Ill be interested to see how this goes as i was thinking about upping my ratio. Did you run 90% in your vento too?

The only thing i will say to you is make sure you filter it down to at least 5 microns and make sure you have extracted the water really well.

cheers, i leave it to settle for a few days and then syphon it through 480micron paint filters, been fine so far, what i am thinking of doing is taking the tank off and welding a drain plug onto the bottom, this way i can drop the contents every few months and make sure the tank is free from fat buildup on the bottom :)

nah ran 60:40 oil:fuel int he vento as it used to hesitate when coming on boost if i ran a stronger mix

my dad ran his old mk3 1.9d golf on cooking oil for most of the time he had it, put a load of miles on it with the stuff too. but alternator (or was it the starter motor...) f*cked up and wheel bearing(s) packed in at just under 200k miles. engine ran alright up to the point where it was taken off the road though

I was half thinking of running my polo on oil. Where can you buy the correct filters to filter it before putting it in the tank?

I suggest you spend about £200 quid making a proper filtering rig which will filter it down to 5 microns and extract the water.

Tbh rawli theres no way i would put oil in my car that had only been filtered to 480 microns and hadnt been dewatered.

today brought coilover action, managed to get it at a level that I'm happy with heightwise but doesnt compromise the everydayness of the car. just needs tracking up now as its a mile out!

oh and some smoked indicators off ebay

want a bonnet bra next, and maybe some different wheels, I've got some mk3 anniv wheels but they're 5 stud and dont think ill get a 20mm spacer and lowness without having to do arch work :( need some rear lights to lol

Yea fair enough thats your opinion!

But people who just run on a concerntate of 50% or above on veg oil will have problems! I know this for a fact mate! The whole point in having diesel is, as a fuel to burn, but it also contains a internal lubricant, which keeps plungers in injectors moving freely, valves, springs moving in injector Pumps! Veg oil also contains water which acts against these moving parts and causes corrosion, even if you try you wont get rid of all of it!

Veg oil doesnt burn at the same rate as Diesel causing other problems!

The company i work for, have been apart of a project to run a Cummins KTA50G (V16) diesel generator on Veg oil! Over the past 6 months we have replaced, 2x complete setts of injectors, 3x injector pumps, 2x pistons, rocker arms, push rods etc

The veg oil is heated up to the correct temperature, using boilers, it is then filtered numerous time through, 10 micron filters then 5, gradually getting finer! And it still isnt running at its optium!

I dunno, all the people i know who have done tens of thousands of miles on it and all the guys on the alternative fuel forums haven't had any bother, except for people using too high a ratio or people with Lucas pumps who didnt install heaters. A guy i know who has an A4 tdi has been running on about 80-90% veg oil for the last 25/30k ish miles, he had the head off last week and the engine was very clean with no coke on the valves, head or pistons. He was very impressed and as a mechanic sees a lot of these cars.

As for lubrication, the bosch fuel pumps on diesel polos have internal lubrication, but i suppose you already know that, which is why its ok to run on veg oil, the Lucas pumps on some other cars do not hence why people have problems.

Unused veg oil doesnt contain water, when I'm putting it in my car i use brand new fresh oil. I know the water content in used oil can be a problem, which is why i said to the OP that its very important to have a filtering rig which can dewater the oil, as it seems to me he is just filtering it and not dewatering.

If you are running your generator on used veg oil, are you actually dewatering it, or just heating and filtering?

When i said in my last post that it was fine to run on veg oil that is what i was referring to. I was hardly saying it was ok to put SVO in an unmodded car, and i kinda do think this guy may run into bother with his 90% mix especially as it dont seem to be dewatered or filtered enough. So actually i guess we are kind of in agreement on that.

But yeah i stand by my original point that up to 50/50 mix should be ok on an unmodded car. I wasnt saying it was ok to run 90% with no mods.

From what i know, filters and stuff dont remove water, you have to heat the oil for a couple hours, then let it cool for a day or more, then it separates with the oil on top and water on the bottom, so if you have it in a tank with a tap on the bottom you just drain the water off. You need to do this a couple of times.

That said, i dont know what a "water trap" is but the only way i know works to get the water out is to heat and leave to cool before you even filter the oil, and then again after filtering, dunno how using some sort of inline thing would even work.
