Righto I was driving down to dublin today and it seemed pretty hard to get the car into gear, like 3rd and fourth Just driving at normal speeds.

When I parked in Dublin and did what I needed to do I got back in the car and while difficultly changing 1st,2nd,3rd the car sounds like it has a supercharger(crazy whining)

Now while the whining I can hear like a rattling noise but once I get up to 5th no noises.

Also the difficulty in getting into gear seems to be intermittent, sometimes its fine and other times its really stiff.

what you's reckon?

Oh and the car drives fine, and the clutch seems fine too

another gearbox with no oil

that will need a new set of bearings and try putting some oil in it makes them last longer

sounds like gearbox on way out, mine did it for about a week then crack and completely went!!!!

gearbox oil must be filled, and checked regularly or gearboxes will go

Is this polo Gearbox problem....JUST because people dont check the oil???

I've checked mine since i got it.. and just did a change at 40,000 miles and I'm hoping its gonna be fine, all the car review sites i looked at said nothing about gearboxes prior to buying it... surely they would all slate them if it was such a big problem?

THE OIL IN GEARBOX SHOULD BE CHANGED YEARLY AND THEN THEY WOULD LAST

fully agreed, you wouldnt leave your engine oil would you? so why leave your gearbox oil?

Well drained the gearbox today, No metal in the oil (must be a good sign) filled er up again with lucas gearbox lubricant as well

fingers crossed the noises will go away!!!

the noises wont magically go away.... i';d just get it into a garage asap,

That was the garage, was the mechanic that drained it - gonna leave it til saturday, see how it goes

There is quite a difference between a sealed Gearbox unit and an Engine (mainly the whole combustion thing)

I have replaced the oil in the gearbox and i only got it with 34,000 on so i think thats reasonable...Must be something in the whole bearing issue cos so many on here say about gearboxes going.

Quite irritating really.. as its not something cheap to replace or repair

very clean tbh only slight glimmers in the oil and mostly quite clear still, it was as thin as nats piss though... which was slighly confusing as a 75 w 90 oil should remain fairly thick surely?

Because ze Germans never get anything wrong, to admit so would simply take time away from being efficient.

I'm sure that's what a certain leader probably said as he put his cyanide capsule under his tounge - no names though! :p

I'm still convinced this problem will be far more likely by slamming it to the floor (putting the drive shafts at less than comfortable angles PERMANENTLY) and with huge wide and heavy wheels on.

Also it cant hurt by changing the gearbox oil... and making sure there is some in there lol

The 6N uses the same box as in the G40. The G40 one is rated for 155nm, stock G40 is 150 nm, but is quite a bit lighter than a 6N with its 830 kg. The wear on the bearings and the tooths are obviously higher when you ad 200 kg....

The weakest part of the box is 5th gear bearings and the teeth........

The box on my 1.9d is dropping oil, and has some oil on the box casing, near the driveshaft (can actually smell it).

Having said that it hasn't punched a hole in the box, and it doesn't whine.

I doubt you would find any metal in the oil

Theres a magnet in there that collects ferrous bearing material!

Does sound like the gearbox is due a possible failure. Lack of oil may be a factor. But vw gearbox's do need looking after

thats probably diff bearing oil seals.

What oil is recommended for a 6N2 Gti ? might give mine a change not sure when it was last done.
