advice for anyone with a mk4!

Featured Replies

yo peeps,

I have a Mk4 GLX (1.6) and I'm havin a piss around with some premium fuels to see if there is any difference, see if they live upto the hype...

anyways i filled up a week ago with shells v-power as I had a long m-way journey so i thought what the hek!

Noticed a few diferences:

better from 50-80, better start and just a smoother engine overall

I then filled up with just under a quater tank with tesco's super unleaded (98 RON) as I've heard good things about it. well basically ITS SHITE!! Maybe its due to both fuels been in the tank but I now have a shitty idle, crappy cold start and just generally a worse performin engine. My car now keeps wanting to stall at the lights/junction etc.

dunno if anyone else has done this, but if your plannin to my advice is DONT!

Tesco super unleaded is less flammable than volvic!

reckon ill stick to my shell tbh. its the cheapest in my area anyways so thats just a bonus!

ill just use v-power for long distance stuff

I always use Shell. Never go to the supermarkets.

i've been buying cheap petrol off a mate (he drains it from all the scrap cars and sells it on) and i've noticed no difference to running at all and god knows what kind of a mix of shit is in that

maybe you have another issue with your car? surely if the tesco stuff made cars run like that no body would buy it :?

tesco 99 beats v power in my opinion, and besides its produced by a motorsport fuels company called greenergy anyway so its hardly a bog standard supermarket fuel!

Actually, different cars respond well to different fuels. We had a thread about this on my local forum, and found that whilst your car might be great on BP and shit on Tesco for example, another type of car could be the complete opposite! Best to try them all and see what works for you.

Also, supermarkets have the same petrol as other places, you dont think Tesco own their own refinery do you?

Its all in your head.

Yes you may get 350 miles out of a tank of V-power one week but the next only 300 miles out of a tank of tesco fuel. But can anyone on here honestly say they drive exactly the same distance with the same driving style every week? I think the answer will be no.

I use Asda petrol most of the time just now and still get 42mpg as I did when using Shell or tesco stuff.

the placebo effect, you gotta love it

To get any kind of noticable effect from using higher octane fuel, you must use it for at least a few tank fulls.

I've also heard that the ecu will have adapted to the higher octane, which may explain your idle probs after. However, that was heard on here so there is a good chance its complete BS

Personally, I use Shell only cause I get points :paranoid: and I cant say I never use V-power either

i use jet fuel

31.9 per litre baby!

I really have no problem with supermarket fuel, it's pretty much all I use. I used to use BP at times because it was the closest garage (though that closed last week) and didn't seem to make any difference at all.

Actually that's a lie, I might have had a problem with Morrisons because after I filled up my car struggled for about half a tank, but then I changed my fuel filter and filled up elsewhere so don't know if Morrisons had dodgy fuel, or more likely my fuel filter was just clogged up.

i think the quality of fuel is getting worse, mine and my mate (who has a clio 182) have had problems with our cars after usinf tesco fuel mine keeps cutting ot on idle and his doesn't rev properly until the engine is warm wheras with other fuels its been fine
