What a result! Hope the restoration goes well, keep us updated. Looks like a facelift GLS model to me. The mudflaps are very rare now, so hang on to them.

looks like you've found that just in time. I can't believe someone has sanded it back to bare metal in parts and then just left it to rot. Looks like it should clean up OK. Make sure you post progress pictures!

Poor little mk1. Hopefully you will turn it into what it deserves to be!

Progress pics will be arriving shortly, I will start work tomorrow night, mostly clearing the thing out and getting a coat of rattle paint on it to stop the rust in it's tracks, for a while at least, just while I sort the mechanicals out

You know, I thought of you and your mk1 when I saw this car... Lol, I'll assess what work needs doing to the car first before I think about flogging stuff on, but I will let you know either way

Nice potential restoration project.

Quite a bit of work to be done, but for £60 and what it could become, it's worth it.

Really liking this (I so want a mk1 ) it's going to be a lot of hard work but it'll so be worth it. Keep us posted as you go along, this should make a very interesting thread!

Doesn't look too bad at all, total bargain.

Get a product called Deox gel from Bilt-hamber for that rust, if you put it on with cling film overnight it should draw all the rust away and then you just attack it with water and and a wire brush let it dry, filler, acid etch on bare metal etc..

Nice save, interesting colour. Looks like you have some work ahead of you. I'm just about at the other side and said goodbye to rust and hello to primer :-D

So here we are, today's progress, Each minute spent in this little car made me realise just how badly this "restoration" had been carried out, The interior was a joke...

First job: Rear Window from whatever car attatched (with Duct tape!)

Then spread all the exterior trim out and assessed condition, soon discovering the front grille is from a Golf Now in need of a Polo grille!

Next, interior stripped out. Rear seats had some revolting black vinyl glued & stapled over the original cloth, pictured below torn off....

Disgusting.

Below after foam/glue was removed, forgot to take a picture after I refitted/stapled the fabric before I put it back in the car >.<

Manky black carpet that looks like it came from a classroom... Not made for the car, so it's not going back in the car!

Yum yum!

Next, All trim back on, p'd off about the grille though

Found the original carpets :-D All in great condition... Apart from KING MORON cut a hole out where the rubber mat sits by the pedals... A job for next weekend

Finally after bailing out water, sweeping and minting up the floorpan, things could start to take shape
