well is the cage FIA? aslong as you use a minimum of 38mm CDS tube and 3mm spreader plates then your strut top extensions are fairly easy.

I was under the impresion that you can only modify forward of the A pillars without haveing to get the cage recertified.

@ take it Oldskool, the cold lap suggests that the welds haven't penetrated fully and therefore aren't as strong as they could be. IMO, the welding could generally be far better. It has to be said though, that it is very difficult to weld around the inside of some of the accute angles, especially as it appears to be have welded in situ. However, I'm sure it'll be sufficient for Will's requirements.

I agree Will, it'd be nice to extend the cage forward of the A posts and on to the suspension turrets. Could still do with the dash brace to really stiffen up the front legs though IMO.

As I initially said, the weld splatter can be cleaned up successfully to improve the cosmetics of the install. A very sharp cold chisel is ideal for knocking off spots and you could probably blend in the rear turret plates with an angle grinder mounted flap disc.

@ Will, if you decide to extend or triangulate the cage in any way, I have some new 38mm CDS tube you can have for a few quid?

Cheers Richard, I'll probably take it off you when I get back from holiday (three weeks.)

The cage will definatly be brought forward to the front struts, and I've got a strut brace so I'm fairly happy with front end rigidity, it may need a dash bar and further triangulation next year if my ITBs foul the strut brace thugh!

I'd prefer them left as they are! By removing metal they are A) hiding the standard of the weld to the naked eye and B) further weakening the weld.

Those welds aren't perfect but they aren't going to cause you any troubles, the metal around them will tear before the welds give.
