I pulled off my drive yesterday to turn my car around, had the steering full lock to do a 3 point kind of turn, and all of a sudden I hear a grinding noise, jacked the car up and took the wheel off to find both the front wheels had been scraping the wishbone arms on the inside of the rim bad enough to slice the metal

I'm guessing I'll be needing to space my wheels out? the car is lowered by around 60-70mm, but just wanted to ask incase anyone else has had this problem?

I'm getting new wheels soon and wasn't sure how much I would needing to space them by to stay clear of this problem as it seems pretty dangerous thing to start happening and I dont want to wreck my new wheels.

If anyone has had problems similiar please share your suggestions or anything I could do which might help.

Thanks

Bill

surely you would hear the grinding noise even when you are going stright forward if they were to close?

I guess the wheels have too high an offset?

let it grind.. it'll stop eventually :D

Seems as if it is only doing it near full lock, which is still an issue and it's grinding my wheels away, they're only 6j 13's and I'm pretty sure the offset isn't too high? I am getting new wheels soon ( teledials ) and they are the high offset 52.3 IIRC, what adaptor would you guys recommend? I can get either a 20mm, 25mm or 30mm, but I just want to make sure this won't happen with new wheels on and everything as it seems really unsafe and will eventually fuck the wheels up.

any help would be greatful and anyone running teledials please pass your advice over :-)

agreed mine catch on full lock, lowering changes the angles of everything so thats why it scapes. :>

It's not practical though is it really? I don't know when it's going to stop, it's wearing away my wheels more and more so why should it be left? Anyone with common sense would know it shouldnt just be left which is why I'm asking you guys how to get rid of the problem I'm having.

Some people are just idiots.

What size/width/offset are the wheels? Its hard to say what spacers you need if we don't know what the wheels are.

They're sport rader alloys that originally came on the car when i bought it, not too sure on the offset could be around 35?

put it this way they dont poke they sit fairly in the arch

Yeah that seems a bit odd. Have you had the tracking and camber done?

Nope because when I went to get it tracked the guy told me one of my wishbone bushes had popped out, so I've ordered powerflex bushes and received them last week, I haven't used the car since I failed to get the tracking done as I didnt want to wear down the tyres much more, so i'll be fitting new wishbones with the new bushes and then go to get the tracking done and camber, would it be best to wait till then and see if they would know what the problem is?

It could just be because the bushes are fooked. Couldn't tell you for sure though.

Yeah well the bushes haven't been replaced since the car's came out of the factory according to service book so could be mashed by now I'm guessing, I'll be replacing these and the wishbones ASAP, just wanted to make sure I didnt come across the same problem with wider wheels and a higher offset and end up fuckin them up.

My sport raider wheels are 13x5j and have an ET of 8. yes 8. wow.

I also have a grinding noise, but its only happened since i changed the discs and pads at the front, and it temporarily dissapears when i lift off the throttle.

On the adapter sizes I'm running 25mm front, 30mm rear, but would like to go 30 front, 35 rear, oh and thats a 6j not 7j

Think i might go 30mm all round

have you jacked it up and looked closely where its hitting, could be your bushes

what would you suggest then?

well all you can do is change your bushes and the wishbones, and with you running an offset so high as 50ish on the wheels you want 25mm or 30mm would be my choice of spacer depending on if you want your wheels to poke out a little

It's hitting the wishbone arm, my bushes are knackered the drivers side one has popped out, replacing them soon with new wishbones and powerflex bushes. Yes i would like the wheels to poke a little. i just want to make sure they clear this problem up, dont fancy grinding the backs of my new wheels up like it has done on the wheels i have atm, but after what people are saying could my bushes of caused abit of play in the wishbone arms and caused them to nock the wheel?

You're not gonna know what clearance you've got with the Porsche wheels until you've got them on,so sit down. Their offset will be far reduced with the adaptors on anyway, they'll stick out much further than your shirt buttons and you'll have replaced your collapsed wishbones by then so you really dont need to be biting your nails over it.

Have a cup of tea,it'll be alright on the night.

i have the same problem when turning right on full lock in my mk4, using my standard steels - 13x5.5J ET35? or my BBS RN - 15-7J ET35 with 5mm spacers so ET30. For some reason the steering will steer more to right then the left - about an extra 3/4 of a turn judging by the steering wheel, the only thing that could govern this is the rack or the track rod ends really even though i've never adjusted them unequally.

Anyway my advice is stop panicking and just don't turn your wheel onto full lock that's all i've done for the last 18 months and it's fine.
