right basically I've been powdercoating in industry for awhile now and it gets quite boring, so i made a call to a company in america who do fancy pearlescent, candy, metallic, glitter and crackle powder coatings,

after some advice i bought my own equipment (not all of it yet)

as id like to start powdercoating some of the parts on my cars and mates cars..

as my work charges extortionate rates, dont do small items, only job lots, with basic colours and i think it can be done alot cheaper..

just wondering if i started offering a service of me powdercoating car parts such as rocker covers etc..

how much interest would i have...

.. so how many of you would want to get that sort of thing done..

and what you'd all be willing to pay.. as my work charges extortionate rates and i think it can be done alot cheaper.. (havnt worked out how much yet tho)

so if there is enough interest i was going to buy a load of different special effect powders,, powdercoat a few lengths of pipe to show the finish and what i can offer...

but i just thought id check the demand about the place before i invest a load of cash into more of my own equipment..

(as work are very funny about hobbles and using theirs)

i think there would be intrest but we'd need to see before n after pics of the items you can do in decent pics so you can judge the quality

and how long would the turn around be ?? some guys would want the stuff back quick if the car is used often

be nice to have a rough price list too

i think its a good idea, but like anything, its an idea and putting it into working and profit and customer satisfaction, is a whole different thing

your best bet dude is to get hold of a few cheap parts, rocker covers, brake calipers, etc

powdercoat a batch if you like, and see how they sell, then you will have a price to go off too

if you need a hand with bits I'm sure i could muster a few parts up for you to test water with

well i assume youve spoke without thinking there.. most companies, like the one i powdercoat for only have large ovens, as I've stated, which use alot of electric, costing alot.. (£40 an hour)

where as using an oven thats small saves alot..

and as for the quality and service, i am the local industrial powdercoater for my area, and have never had complaints with my work, although specialist paints will be a different story as there are alot of aspects that determine the final outcome.

i will try and work out costs etc once i have found and contacted a reasonable uk supplier of specialist powder products,

i also have to get my oven made in work, so its going to be awhile before i can show pictures, although i will have a chat with my company and see what we can sort out,

as for the putting a plan into action, i have thought about things, but my main problem is funds, which is why I'm doing it when i can..

like this week I've bought my gun and electrostatic charger.. so the plan has started..

Big oven = many parts in one go = reduced costs. Local company do a lot of work for the oil industry so anything I give them is small in comparison but the price is good...they just put it in with other parts they are working on.

Dan's idea was good...get yourself some parts and sell them on...something like a G40 rocker cover powder coated black would be worthwhile...or some inlet manifolds etc.

It would be nice to have someone who would put the time into intricately mask complicated small parts...I never feel I can trust the local guys with some bits and stripping off excess coating is annoying.

many parts if you have them though and everyone wants black, which is rare, big batch ok..

but individual customer needs is different as you cant put different colour parts in the same oven.. as the particals can transfer, ruining a lighter colour.

so if you wanted a candy red rocker cover and DK wanted silver bottom arms,

this means two small loads of two colours, which means waiting to fill the oven would take too long and youd be waiting months for parts..

so big companies wont do it

whereas a small oven uses very little electric and uses it efficiently,

masking can be difficult, but there are plenty of ways of not getting powder on parts, its just some times time consuming.. meaning big companies really dont want too..

appreciate your questions as it helps me consider all aspects and make sure I've covered everything in my head :)

and if i do something interesting in work i will try and get pictures up.. but it might take some time..

as far as I've practiced so far yes, i got a set of ats classics which I'm going to powdercoat to test the water.. so will update that once i got my oven made up..

However, powder coating is just the finishing touch. What about the preperation? The majority of components such as calipers, struts and suspension arms would need shot/media blasting as well as the normal degreasing prior to powder coating. Would you be able to offer these services too or would parts have to be sent already prepared?

well i know i didnt explain that, but when you take your car for paint, they sand fill and prep your car,

its part of the process, you just expect it.

to assume you can just coat things and charge people would be nuts, and id never have customers..

i can do all the preperation myself as the closer to the coating time the better, sand, shotblast, degreasing, preheating and then baking will all be done as part of the powdercoating process.
