Okay I just had another colossal argument with one of my mateys regarding the model of Polos.

As far as I understand it, THIS is a Mk4 Polo:

And THIS is a Mk3 Polo:

However my mate says that, what we dubbers call the Mk4 polo is actually a Mk3. His dad works for a VW Specialist and he says he knows he's right because he orders the parts for the polos etc. Furthermore, if you check Wikipedia it agrees with him, i.e, the Mk4 Polo is labelled as the Mk3.

I know there's a great deal of confusion on this as some companies advertise parts for Polos with different labels.

So can someone please explain to me why is there such confusion about the model numbers?

i believe that what we know as the mk4 is actually called mk3f correct me if I'm wrong

Its because of the face lift models, to most people each new shape is a new model. Like the 6n (mk4) is different to the

6n2 (mk5) but to VW it was a face lift.

So was he right? Is it actually a Mk3? And all of us (including PVW and the like) call it a Mk4??

i think most people know them as mk4, and most parts places know what your on about when you say mk4, i know gsf in sheffield do haha

But yeah I'm sure its mk3f

so it is a Faceflift of the MK3 (Mk3f) But they call it the Mk4?

Club Polo / UK says - Europe / VW says

mk1 - mk1

mk2 - mk2

mk3 - mk2f

mk4 - mk3

mk5 - mk3f

mk6 - mk4

The 'f' stands for facelift. The chassis of the mk3 is the same as a mk2 but with 'facelifted' body panels, as with the mk5 and mk4. This is really the correct way as it's not really a new 'mk' of the vehicle. We're too old in our ways to all change now though

Not sure what we're calling the latest incarnations but there's been 2 facelifts of the mk6/mk4, next one will be on a new chassis I think so will be onto the mk5 chassis (as VW would refer to it)
