Hi, my girlfriend has just brought a 1992 mk3 polo cl (the miniture estate one). It was brought without a stereo and possibly without speakers, I was just wondering if anyone knows what the factory speaker sizes are and if there are any rear speakers. There are grilles up front on the dash for fronts, I'm not sure if there are any there or not, but I would like to buy her some speakers as it's her 1st car and she would like a nice stereo set up.

As for the rear speakers, if there were never any factory fitted ones I will not bother as I'm not keen on the idea of cutting holes in the parcell shelf for "bad boy" ones.

i believe there 4x6 in the rear on the side, jbl do some nice ones for around 35quid

Rear ones are easy to spot, open the boot and look under the parcel shelf supports, they will be there pointed upwards.

3.5" round speakers on the dash.

6x4" speakers at the rear next to the parcel shelf.

Should be able to budget those and a cheap CD player for under 3 figures

No. I think only G40 came with back speakers.

I got some 6x4 out of a golf @ the scrappy for mine plus wiring. Not too bad a job especially if your putting in a 4 speaker capable head unit

I've been told that 3.5'' speakers up front dont go in without a fight (I'm referring to the jbl's)

^^ Depends on the shape, the holes are 3.5" standard, but if you try and fit speakers with a large magnet, there's a chance it will hit the bodywork under the dash and wont sit flush.

I had some Sony's that did this, they didnt even have holes to fix them in, just sat in the hole crooked :S

Got 4" Kenwoods now, its not that hard to make the holes larger, if you look, its as if the hole was 4" and then another piece of plastic has been put underneath to make it 3.5", so just cut that out and voila...

Only problem is modifying the standard grilles to cover the 4"s up, which i still haven't got around to doing.. might have a look for some universal speaker covers, just to make them less noticeable.

Ok, So, I got the car today and we've looked at it. It comes with what i'm guessing are the original front speakers and the garage threw in a clarion CD player, bonus.

Alpine SXE-0825S speakers will go in perfectly into the dashboard and you could pair them up with the matching 6x4 in the rear panels.

I know this as I've got them in mine and I do car audio for a living !

Infinity, Kenwood and Pioneer also still do 8cm front speakers. You probably won't get the infinity ones in due to the overall chassis size. Kenwood and Pioneers should go in though.
