i can imagine quite a few people actually

if you think about it, the police now take away cars without insurance. on the spot if they want

with mods not declared, you basically have no insurance, there giving you the chance to declare them.......otherwise, they could have taken your car away

I've been pulled randomly and they've checked that I'm insured and legal etc.. not once mentioned mods.

true i mean I've heard the scenario where you turn your car back to standard when you have a crash as when the insurance company comes and picks your car up for repair. but I've driven my dads merc 190e had a full remus system, lights all round (not neons just standard but new lamps etc) the 2006 shape 17 inch e class wheels etc never had a problem its down to your insurer not the f'in police ( i hate em I've never been pulled over but i know what they are like as in my mates car got pulled plenty of times)

Thats not quite true, if the mods on your vehicle are not 'type approved' for your vehicle then you as the driver would be breaking the law so the Police would be enpowered to pinch you, most common culprit is HID light kits, the insurance company will take any route to wash their hands of you after they have had your money, but in most cases you have to declare any modifications when taking out your policy, if you dont you have made a false declaration, and its only logic that the insurers wont pay

:-(

I understand as the same thing as tints these days few guys i know have had the limo type tints and its either take em off now when pulled over or points/fine by the police. even know a couple with the hid type bulbs being pulled over but they luckily blagged it. but i mean things like alloys not many people declare them, when it comes to insurers few guys i know end up just putting the steelies back on when it comes to the insurer coming over to view the car.

i got stopped last week, he could have easily given me 6 points as I had a slit in my tyre aswell, thats a straight driving ban... but my insurance checked out fine and he let me on my way (with a producer)

and he didn't mention the mods in any way.

I've been pulled over many times since I began driving and although they've commented on the car, they've never mentioned any mods. Last copper that stopped me knew my car was modified but said nothing!

i agree with pomm01, insurers will do anything to get out of paying up, especially when they already got your cash off you.

If you got mods, tell them. Even if you 'usually' do get away with it, or it doesnt get mentioned when you get pulled, for the sake of a few quid i wouldnt risk it.

If your mods aren't seriously illegal or dangerous then the police are only likely to be interested in you if there are other offences present.

That said they are still entitled to check that they a) have not made your insurance invalid and b) conform to road traffic regulations but the only 100% guaranteed safe course of action is to declare your mods and make sure that they mean your vehicle is still roadworthy otherwise you can have no complaints.

What Mods did they pull up?

but i mean things like alloys not many people declare them, when it comes to insurers few guys i know end up just putting the steelies back on when it comes to the insurer coming over to view the car.

...so if i became paralysed in an accident i should be worrying about withdrawing from hospital and rushing home to change my rims over to the steelies so i can actually get a legit payout an not have to cover car repairs, third partys car repairs, hospital bills and the third partys hospital bills...

pretty stupid idea if you ask me

if your seriously injured in an accident where you havnt insured your car properly, your basically fucked

Totally agree with Gugz if you can't afford to or do not insure your modifications you shouldn't be on the road or have the mods in the first place, as in effect your insurance is null and void.

be safe and pay the extra for all mods to be declared what is the point in running a huge risk and not getting paid out, with no insurance !

i find it funny people can pay a arm and a leg on mods but are to tight to pay the lil extra and have the car actually insured with the mods lmao

not always the case though, I'm now 6 months into owning the G and want to lower it and put some minilites on it, when i rang up to ask the insurance they won't do it, or even quote me for it.

so i would have to take out a new policy therefore wasting 6 months and 400quid. I don't mind paying for the mods but i arnt losing the years no claims, so I'm still debating whether to do it or not.

Second time i have posted this story on here - it will make you think.

Lad i went to college with had a 106 quiksilver................... did sod all to it engine and suspension wise.

BUT his only mod was a rear rollcage (show cage) but bolted in.

he was stopped by the police and given a producer (this was 4years ago now) on the producer was written (rollcage fitted)

he promptly handed in his documents to the local police station where the police told him that his rollcage was not on his insurance.

his insurance company was contacted while he waited - they told them that his insurance was invalid.

he surrendered his licence and was hit with 6points for driving without insurance, due to having his licence only 4months he lost it for 1year.

it cost him

a - his licence

b - ££££ in driving lessons x2

c - re tests

d - his car

e - NEARLY his job!

f - a bloody large premium when his licence was returned

Come on guys - it doesnt hit you that hard to declare them

Which insurance company is that??????

Some specialist insurance companies allow mods and don't charge for adding alloys etc. but have the proviso that they will only replace with standard equipment.

I'd say the majority would be happy to add your mods and charge you a healthy admin charge for the ammendment as well as the extra fee to cover the mods.

If you have a G it's one of those cars that you are more than likely to fettle with and should be insured with an insurer that understands this.

Shit, that story is not nice,

I'm on quinn, and although there bastards to pay out. They dont charge any extra for non proformance enhancing mods. So alloys, fogs, gti grills, anything like that. S

I've been pulled countless times and asked to stop at check points since moving back home as there hot on pulling in small hatchbacks and anything that could be modified, and they will pick on anything from off color sidelight to bike can's, they check body kits, tints (windows and lights), engine mods (induction kit's etc) and anything else they can think of.

I'm a bit of a let down to them as my car looks cosmetically standard and they have not said anything about my induction kit as of yet or my HID's.

Even my mums been pulled in while driving her mango saxo around much to the embarrassment of he officer at finding a middle aged woman behind the wheel and despite being lowered and modified has never suffered he same treatment as i have when pulled in.

i wish i hadnt declared my BBS alloys, they have a VW badge and come as standard on some polos, well could have got away with it, would just have to say, yeah they came with it, but i sprayed em black, didnt think that will increase my premium....

i might tell em i put the standard alloys back on after xmas :p what do you reckon?

doubt theyll give you any money back so not much point tbh

simple rule......

if you mod your car in any way, even something small like a de-badged grill.... DECLARE IT!!!!

god forbid, but if you ever have a crash, your insurance will VOID your insurance, and i feel really sorry for the person you've gone into who will have to claim off their own insurance as you'll be classed as an un-insured driver!!

then it gets worse for you: your insurance will be void, which means 6 points on your liscence, and you've possibly bought a polo for cheap insurance and if you get 6 points within 2 years you LOSE YOUR LISCENCE and have to start all over again which means when you pass your test again your insurance will probably be double what it should be!

IF YOU CANT AFFORD TO INSURE IT, DONT MOD IT!!!!

rant over with

Its worth bearing in mind that your insurance isnt allowed to wriggle out of paying the 3rd party claim on technicalitys. Its only your claim that they will argue with.

Its hard declaring mods all the time, especially when you are adding to the list weekley. But like people have said you have to do it. I'm useless with it, my first insurance policy was on a land rover with 3 inch suspension lift, massive tyres, roll cage, bull bar, engine conversion, all that jazz and I insured it as a standard motor, even had to tell them it was ex MOD so they would insure it with the Q plate. Grim stuff.

I've been "pulled" while sitting in a layby (late at night, stopped for a kip). copper accused me of having an unroadworthy vehicle, drug dealing, stealing lead off the church roof opposite! etc etc...

my car is fully declared so i asked him to let his dog sniff round me, the car, and the graveyard (reconed he'd seen me drop peeps off, id been asleep for 1/2 hour!). and get a traffic cop down to inspect my car. he was just being a cock so did none of it, but if my car wasnt insured as modded and traffic had looked at it id have lost it.

it sucks, but stay legal with you mods and you wont get in trouble.

its also quite good fun arguing with them when you know your in the right, as apposed to bullshitting them (and shitting you pants!) when you know theres somethin wrong with the car.
