stopped by police, must declare mods

Featured Replies

I've had 3 modified cars and none of them were declared. my first GT i genuinely tried to declare but i got so pissed off with geore adadagwendo or whatever his name was in the norwich union call centre when after spending 10minutes trying to explain to him what a performance exhaust was he answered back with and i aint shitting you - " Sports Doors?" i thought fuck it and told them it was std. my black hatch was down on paper as a car but cos of the van panels was trechnically a van, had a copper rap his kuckles on it once thinking it was painted glass haha, it went through the mot as a car which confused paddy a bit lol, was stopped i really cant remeber how many times in it- genuinely a minimum of 4 times a week, and not once were any of my mods brought into question- hand painted matt black (colour change was registered with dvla) van panels instead of rear windows, matt black scala rims, lowered, full exhaust, GT conversion, and sprayed matt black rear lights, leather interior, lots of bits n bobs. even had a copper ask me to pop the bonnet as they didnt believe me it was still only a 1l which they were being told by central it was, popped the bonnet and my defence was- mate its still got the 4spd box in it, looks at gear knob- "oh yeah it is only the 1l 4spd, ok mate off you go" - little to his knowlewdge id fucked my leather mom o gear knob and put the 1l 4spd one on as it was all i had hahahahaha

thats back in the day though

nowadays with insurance and mot's and everything all the more closer linked by the new systems, abd alot of tightening up of insurance loop holes etc, and a hell of a lot of maturing by me, its best to just decalre it, if you cant afford to insure your mods, dont buy the car!

The police can't actually check that far in to your insurance policy details without ringing up your insurance provider going through your policy details with them etc which usually takes a while and is something they won't bother to do at the side of the road.

Well, at least that is what I was told...could still be wrong information.

had a mate that crashed his 16v 6n which was "standard" on the insurance , only his car involved , but the po po`s turned up and asked him if the scafolding in the back was declared , he did a bit of quick thinking and told the po po`s he had just had it fitted that mornin and lucky for him it was a bank holiday monday so he could not ring them to declare it .

but when he rang his insurance and declared the cage and the accident , they stiched him up propper , he had to pay about £500 for them to cover the caar and then for his efforts they eventually paid him out £1000 for the 16v he paid £2800 for 9 months earlier , the car also had coilies and 15" which he was lucky to get away with

another mate got tuged in his mk1 and the po po`s told him if they see it again with no interiour and alloy`s they would impound the car , so he put it all back how it was to be safe

and also a mate got pulled with tints in the front , they made him rip them out at the side of the road , and then told him he could not drive it home , he did get it home in the end but had to drive it with the windows open because of the sticky stuff

i have not declared stuff in the past , but nowadays the po po`s are to hot on it to risk !

I'm lowering my 6n and putting non standard alloys on. Called up to check the price before i do it (how about that for a sensible idea?) and premium has gone up by £20. and thats including the admin fee....

Way i see it the price of the insurance premium is part of the cost of the mod. If you think your gonna save a few quid by not declaring, you may as well not bother insuring at all and save even more.

Coppers (well most) arnt stupid either... you ride in a lowered car with big shiney rims... its not standard. fair enough you get idiots who will argue that your seat cover isnt standard either... but dont think its ok for you to take the mick as much as they do and get away with it.

When you have a problem it will spiral into a whole mountain of crap very quickly!

hic are gods of the insurance world! lol

Not polo related but my friend had a modified civic, the police pulled him over, and the same night has his car towed away and impounded for not declaring mods!! Seen as though it only had, different (honda) alloys lowered and exhaust i think its abit harsh.

last time i had my insurance checked the policeman said he thought my car looked cool XD

I once had a Mk1 Fiesta 1.3 that I declared all the mods on. Suspension, Xr2 body kit, interiour, brakes and lights. No engine mods at all.

£200 when standard, I was 23 at the time of insurance. Went upto £380 when declared. I then moved to a slightly shit area and then my next renewal price was £475! That was kept overnight in a garage too.

As a matter of interest I got a quote for a standard 2wd Sapphire Cosworth with NO tracker in the same estate.......... only £700!

I ask you?

But yeah, declare your mods or don't mod at all boys and girls. Its not worth it if the worst was to happen.........

I think thats fair, its not standard is it?

A lot of Polo's on here are only lowered, have alloys and an exhaust! Thats the majority of "mods" for cheap people

How is it harsh? He was driving uninsured. Did he also get an IN10 endorsment?

got stopped a few weeks ago as many people might of read in another topic, but was just wondering is their anybody else that has been stopped and nearly had their car taken away?

why did they want to take your car ??

If a vehicle has no insurance it can be seized under s.165 of the Road Traffic Act. If your mods are not declared on the insurance then your insurance company will almost certainly say that your policy is invalid, meaning that you are then driving without insurance and therefore liable to have your car seized and 6 points added to your licence. Not all cops will choose to do this, but they all have the power to if they wish to.

As someone has already mentioned, if you can't afford to insure your mods, don't fit them!

A colleague of mine seized a Subaru Impreza last week for no insurance and it had £4,000 worth of mods fitted to it. Needless to say the driver (also disqualified from driving at the time) was none too pleased now that his pride and joy is likely to be sold off at the next police auction...

I chanced it the first couple of years and had no issues, it was ridiculas when i was 17 they wanted silly money all the time, the only one i can remember was that they wanted just over £400 when i was asking about putting a backbox on  Obviously i still put it on and didnt declare it haha

  • 2 weeks later...
