Does anyone know of a text message based service that provides a HPI check service.

I remember using one that cost £3.00 per text message but can't seem to find the details.

Anyone know of any?

TBH guys I would never use a cheap HPI check company at all!!!!!

Experience tells me that the databases these companies use can be massively out of date & corrupt.

For example;

I bought a 98 Mk4 Polo back in 2000. I did a full AA HPI check which i paid £50 for. Money well spent at the time.

I come to sell the Polo back in 2006 and a guy did a cheap £5.99 HPI check on the veichle & had great delight in telling me that the vehicle was a total loss and had had 3 windscreens in it plus other small details. He then promptly told me I was a robbing lieing bastard & my car was shit. Now I knew this was not the case as I had a full service history with the car & checked it's history when I had bought it!!!

When I asked which company he had used he told me & asked him to check their records, which he did. The company admitted they had got the wrong details for the vehicle & made a complete hash of it!!!

They sent me an apology as did the buyer who told me I was a lieing tw@t.

Moral of the story is pay extra for a decent check, you may miss a bad car or let a good one get away!!!

I also sold my capri green gti last year only to be told by the new owner that the car used to be blue and had had a respray...i couldnt believe it because the paintwork was SPOT ON and absolutley NO signs of a respray...now I'm starting to think his check was wrong!

You see the problem is, HPI companies will purchase old; out of date databases as they are cheap. 5 times out of 10 they will be right & accurate, but doesn't account for accidents, mods or even typo's on registration plates!!!!

Expensive, but use the AA, it's accurate!!!

I used the AA. but the slightly cheaper one (£15 I think) when i bought my mini.

If you have a mate that works at a dealership, its very cheap then.

the RAC check on their website is only a fiver and is very good

You will probably find that its just been incorrectly recorded from the start. Mine is Calypso Green but its on the V5 as 'Blue'. And is certain lights it does look a greeny blue. But when people say blue they are expecting a BLUE rather a Greeny Blue Colour.

Free HPI check in about an hour :-D

Having a mate who's a copper works fairly well, PNC check is the next best thing. Though they can get in a lot of bother for doing it.

Great for the look on their faces when they tell you they bought it off a granny and you tell them they didn't, they bought it off an 18 year old lad who was driving it about with no insurance.
